Out of Hand Exhibition and LightBox Display – additional information

September is approaching and we hope everyone is busy making something for the Out of Hand (OoH) exhibition and the Lightbox. You can find the entry guidelines and registration form when you log into the website but we have had a few questions and so we want to clarify some things:

Out of Hand Exhibition

Theme. There is no theme for the Out of Hand exhibition. We accept works by members as long as they are original handmade textiles and people must be able to see the submitted entries are made by the hand of you, the artist. ‘Textiles’ covers a wide range of materials including fibres, paper, thread, leather and fabric. We encourage diversity and have shoemakers, basketweavers, spinners and weavers, felters, knitters, bookmakers, beaders, milliners, quilters, dyers, costumer makers and stitchers all exhibiting in the OoH exhibition. The main criteria is that there is some stitch or evidence it is made using textiles. Visit the Gallery on the Stitching and Beyond website to see the diversity of entries in our past OoH exhibitions.

We accept 2D and 3D works. There will be some plinths provided by Salamanca Arts Centre for display of 3D works. If you require plinths or something else eg mannequins, hat stands, busts please let us know when registering your pieces or feel free to provide your own and indicate you are doing so.

Size. We don’t have any size restrictions on works for OoH.

Entries can be mailed if you can’t drop them off to the Long Gallery or the other designated drop off points. Just email us and we will provide a mailing address for you to send your entry to. Make sure you pack them carefully, label your interior packing material with your name, and send them well ahead of time so they arrive in plenty of time.

Registration of entries. Registration of entries opens 1 August on the Stitching and Beyond website. If you have any difficulties with accessing the website then contact StitchingandBeyond@gmail.com and we can help with completing the form. All members are eligible to submit up to 5 entries for free. Please encourage your friends who aren’t members and who want to display to become members. To become a member or renew your membership go to the Stitching and Beyond website.

Lightbox display

The Lightbox display is a separate display to the OoH exhibition but we use it to promote OoH. The display runs for several weeks before OoH and also during it from 10 September to 2 October 2023.

Theme. There is a theme for the Lightbox display. This year it is Birds.

Size. There are size restrictions on the birds as the Lightbox is quite a small display area. They should be no bigger than 150mm tall and should be small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

We are planning to collect people’s birds at our August Monthly gathering on 21 August, 2023. The meeting is held in B block at Kingston Library, Kingston Tasmania. If you can’t make it to meeting or arrange to give it to someone to bring along then contact us at StitchingandBeyond@gmail.com and we can arrange to collect or post them to us. We would love to receive some from our members who live outside Hobart.

Challenge 2023 – Don’t forget Stitching and Beyond’s popular annual Challenge is on again! The theme for 2023 is ‘Under the Microscope’ so it’s time to get your thinking caps on…. We invite members to register up to 5 textile pieces in 2-dimensional, A3 format.
