Colour Play with Leah Higgins
April 21 2023 @ 9:30 AM - April 23 2023 @ 4:30 PM
$335.00Leah Higgins is an internationally exhibited textile artist, author and tutor based in Manchester. Her art has developed from a life-long love of working with textile and stitch. Many of her large abstract quilts are inspired by man-made buildings and industrial structures that shape the urban landscape around her home. Working in series, Leah has focussed on those industries and industrial buildings that no longer exist as well as those whose buildings have been repurposed and still exist today. More recently the process of ‘making’ has become a source of inspiration. In an uncertain world Leah has found that the physical processes of printing, cutting and stitching bring comfort and a renewed sense of purpose.
Her creative process starts with colour and mark. She works directly onto fabric often utilising breakdown, or deconstructed, printing to create a cohesive collection of fabrics characterised by dense mark and complex, often neutral colours. Her fabrics are then cut, collaged and pieced before being layered and quilted. In some pieces she uses stitch, fused applique or additional layers of print to reference specific sources of inspiration.

Colour Play: Low-Tech Screen Printing with Temporary Resists
In this workshop you will learn how to predict and control colour when using Procion reactive dyes, before experimenting with a range of simple screen printing techniques to create your own palette of fabric from your own source of inspiration.
The techniques covered will include open screening for both clean and streaky colour, working with paper and string resists, working with masking tape resists and breakdown printing where thickened dyes are used as a temporary resist.
The workshop is suitable for beginners and for those who want better control of their screen printing outcomes.
