Let’s Explore – Kawandi

June 1 2025 @ 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

This month Lisa will lead an exploration into Kawandi, a slow-stitching technique developed by the Siddis, an African community brought to India more than 800 years ago. Kawandi is made with recycled materials, entirely by hand. The process is engaging, creative, relaxed and sustainable. It is an interesting visual example of repetitive stitching, a technique used to great effect in modern textile art.  We will start a small sample quilt (around 50cm wide) in order to learn the technique.

Our previous Let’s Explore Day took place on May 4th, when members enjoyed working together on their Tasmanian flora pieces for exhibition in the Light Box mini-gallery later this year. Photos from the day can be found here.
