Another indulgent day spent with friends and textiles. Lisa led most of us in an exploration of Kawandi, a slow-stitching technique developed by the Siddis, an African community brought to India more than 800 years ago. Originally Kawandi was made with recycled materials, stitched entirely by hand but if course we all brought along our collections of seductive fabrics. The process was engaging, creative, relaxed and sustainable. We could soon see our visual example of repetitive stitching, a technique used to great effect in modern textile art.
Of course, we enjoyed cake and chat along the way, admiring the other efforts of mastering embroidery stitches and wet felting what promises to be a textured felt jacket.
