Fabulous exhibitions: ‘Kimono’ and ‘Print’

If you’re going to Melbourne before October 5th, you can catch the National Gallery of Victoria’s spectacular exhibition ‘Kimono’. This exhibition explores the Japanese influence on global art and design through more than 70 gloriously decorated traditional kimono, together with wood block prints, associated decorative arts, and key costumes by contemporary fashion designers including Issey Miyake and John Galliano.   Among the techniques on display are gold and silver embroidery, shibori tie dye, rice paste resist designs and indigo blue dyeing, as well as the numerous materials used for textile production throughout Japanese history. If you can’t get there, see photos of the artworks here.

Closer to home, Moonah Arts Centre will be presenting Hunter Island Press – Print, featuring the work of past and present members (Friday 8 August – Saturday 30 August 2025).  This exhibition marks the 21st anniversary of Hunter Island Press, a not-for-profit, artist-run printmaking organisation with an open-access studio on the eastern shore of the Derwent River. Originally formed to support art school graduates, it has become a vital hub for Tasmania’s printmaking community. Opening at 5.30pm, Thursday 7th August, all welcome.
