Exhibitions of interest: stitching the natural world

Members are invited to the opening of two exhibitions by Tasmanian artists at Gallery 76 in Concord West, NSW.

That Which is Around Us by Irene Koroluk of Taroona (1-27 May, opening Sat 3rd May from 4.00 – 5.30 pm) presents a diverse array of Australian flora, organisms and coastal habitats that surround us but are often unvisited, unseen and unexplored. Layers of stitched thread and fabric are used to portray selected native bushland, arid flora, lichen, soft corals and seaweed.

Pinned (1-27 May, opening Sat 3rd May from 4.00 – 5.30 pm) is Vanessa Newton-Brown`s first solo exhibition, exploring the intersection of drawing, hand stitching, and construction. Inspired by the natural world, she reimagines beetles, presenting them like an entomologist`s collection, with these specimens reflecting her questions about the contradiction of admiring and preserving insects through methods that ultimately pin them in place.

Re-IMAGINED by Celyna Ziolkowski (4 April – 3 May 2025, daily 10am – 4pm, Studio Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart) takes everyday items and re-purposes them to wearable art pieces, costumes and decoration.

ngabaya (spirit) by Jaye Gangalidda (9 – 31 May, opening 5.30 pm, 8 May; Moonah Arts Centre) tells stories of identity and connection to Country, specific to Jaye Gangalidda’s Yanyuwa, Garawa and Gangalidda heritage.  Through her textile artworks, Jaye repurposes materials using eco-dyeing, stencilling, quilting, printing, appliqué and stitching.
