Let’s Explore – Embellishing by machine or hand

This month, we want to try exploring hand and machine embellishing together – discover the “what ifs” of life, rather than have one person lead us through.

Embellishers are also known as felting machines and they work using barbed needles to ‘felt’ fabrics and fibres into a base fabric.

You can create interesting coloured and textured surfaces to use on their own, or as a base for free-motion embroidery; add texture to on wool fabrics, decorate textile surfaces… let your imagination run!

Those of us with embellishers will bring our machines to share the potential of the embellishing machine. If you have an embellishing machine languishing in the cupboard, time to dust it off and bring it along and give it an airing. Equally, if you prefer to work by hand, Nicola and others can set you on that path.

What to bring

• a firm piece of fabric eg calico, light weight canvas
• soft things to embellish with, such as wool tops, lace, chiffon, fine silks…
• a hand embellisher (or needle-felting tool) if you have one and that’s what you want to explore
• spare needles for your embellishing machine or hand tool
• your usual collection of sewing kit, scissors, notebook etc…
• your sense of adventure!
• your lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)
• Note: your membership provides tea, green tea, instant coffee, milk and mugs

• 9 November – Dyeing threads (NOTE: 2nd Sunday due to Tasmanian Craft Fair – Deloraine)
• 7 December – Maximising the cabochon effect with stitch and no glue!

How to join KWC and attend our regular Explore Days

• Any financial member of the Kingborough Women’s Club (KWC) ($40 per annum) is welcome to join our monthly Let’s Explore Sundays at no extra cost.

• If you aren’t already a KWC member you can apply here then scan or photograph your form and email it to [email protected] with “KWC Application” in the header.
  Alternatively, you could bring the form with you on a Let’s Explore Sunday.

• Once we reply to your email, then please make payment directly to KWC.
  The annual fee is $40 and is due 1 July each year.
