Let’s Explore – Dyeing with Rust
January 7 2024 @ 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

We will be exploring the wonderful opportunities of dying textiles with rust. Start hunting around your shed and the local tip shops for old interestingly-shaped bits of iron (non-galvanised).
Be imaginative – don’t restrict yourself to just washers and springs. Things that already show signs of rust will give better/more immediate results.
What to bring
- Iron bits & bobs – BUT remember that galvanised iron pieces will not rust
- Wire – BUT remember galvanised wire will not rust
- A short length of rusty pipe (if you have one)
- A 2 litre bottle of white vinegar
- Kitty Litter tray(s) or similar
- String & scissors
- Fabric to rust dye (eg. an old white sheet cut into pieces)
- A mask (for protection from the fumes)
- Optional rubber gloves (sensible if you have sensitive skin)
- Your lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby), tea and/or coffee and a mug
- Bring your current WIP to continue on with once we finish playing with rust!
