Landscape Fragments with Julia Wright
August 5 2025 @ 10:00 AM - August 7 2025 @ 4:00 PM
$450.00Julia Wright trained in Applied Design at Edinburgh College of Art and has been teaching textiles and exhibiting for over 25 years in the UK and internationally.
Now based in Manchester, England, her textural mixed media textile pieces suggest fragments of landscape without being figurative. Work is inspired by weathered, organic, irregular forms and the repetition of simple shapes, like clusters of barnacles, knotted tree roots and growth patterns of lichen.

Landscape Fragments workshop
Students will experiment with textiles materials and techniques including wrapping and binding, couching, entrapment and embroidery to create colourful, textural, mixed media pieces. We will pinch, pull, bind, gather, layer, stitch and explore manipulation techniques to create texture. We will take inspiration from close-up details seen in landscapes and coastal areas interpreting shapes, patterns, textures and colours to create a series of small fabric samples which could remain as a collection of separate objects or be combined to make a more resolved piece. No previous experience is needed, all techniques will be demonstrated and multiple examples will be available for inspiration.

Resource packs of pre-dyed mixed fabrics will be available to buy at the event if required
All participants will need:
- 2-3 reels of sewing machine threads to suit their chosen colour palette
- hand sewing needles (including an embroidery needle)
- scissors
- a small piece of wadding/old cushion stuffing (as small as 10cm x 10cm would be plenty)
- delicate fabric scraps (silk, muslin, scrim, ramie, organdie, thin linen)
