Gathering Colour from Place with Tracy Willans
October 10 2026 @ 9:30 AM - October 11 2026 @ 4:30 PM
$260.00
We are incredibly fortunate to have Tracy Willans teach for us before she returns to WA to live, so please make the most of this opportunity. Tracy has taught pigment and ink-making at the unique Lost Trades Fair in central Victoria where craftsmanship, heritage trades and forgotten crafts are celebrated and skills passed on.
Tracy has been exploring the world of natural art materials since the early 2000s and has a wonderfully deep appreciation of the processes and outcomes which she will share over these two days. The colours in her range are rich and beautiful and reflect her surrounding environment. The skills Tracy shares will give you a wonderful foundation on which to build and explore.
You will have the luxury of bringing very little with you, as Tracy is supplying almost everything you need. We are fortunate too, in being able to use the Colour Circle Art Studio in the surrounding natural environment of Mount Nelson.
Workshop Overview
Ink – Pigment – Paint: An exploration on how to make your own natural art materials by gathering from your local environment.
- We will begin with Eucalyptus leaves, taking them from dry leaves to making ink, then to ink with iron added and then conversion to a dry pigment
- Tracy will show you how she makes her Viola ink and show some colour shifting with Ph
- We will look at how to make a series of copper-based inks
- We will go through the processing of oyster shells and how Tracy uses the resulting pigment
- We will learn how to make a charcoal pigment and identify potential materials
There will be time for some ink play in the middle and we will look at an overview of using pigment in various paints.
You will get to take home samples so remember to bring some small jars with you.
