The disclaimer is by member Lynne Hargreaves who invites you all to see her work at Craft Alive.
The work is called Hargeux and is a story. An autobiography in stitch recording my working life at the Art Gallery of Western Australia 1998 – 2017 in a quasi-Bayeux Tapestry format. Note I began this project before the move of the real tapestry from Bayeux to London was a twinkle in the eye of the Director of the British Museum!
It is over 15.5m long x 39cm wide and was started in March 2017 when I retired to Tasmania. It was always planned as a long term project and design, the sourcing of materials plus fabrication of a custom slate frame took over 3 years. Stitching began in early 2021 and was completed July 2026. AND, which is the fun part, it’s going to be on display for the first time at Craft Alive, MAC02 Hobart 8-10 October. I’ve not actually seen it totally unrolled myself yet as it’s been bit of a task in finding a big enough wall to show it on so I’m grateful to Brett and his team from Craft Alive in helping me out. It stitched on Belgium linen with Athertons Crewel Wool using Bayeux stitch. I’m planning to hang around for the three days and demo Bayeux stitch. Floor talks are planned around mid day and I’m hoping to just inspire people to be creative and get a needle in new hands.
