SUMMARY:Cyanotype Printing – wet and layered methods
DESCRIPTION:Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings\, referred to as blueprints. The process uses two chemicals: ferric ammonium and potassium ferricyanide. The chemicals react with UV light – a sunny day is great but a cloudy day is good too! \nLocal artist\, Margaret Jones\, will guide you through experimentation with the wet process to produce single images and a layered method that adds dimension and interest. The images of Margaret’s work show results that can be achieved using botanicals. \nCopyright: Margaret JonesCopyright: Margaret JonesCopyright: Margaret JonesCopyright: Margaret JonesCopyright: Margaret JonesCopyright: Margaret JonesCopyright: Margaret Jones\nMaterials you need to bring\n\nApron\, gloves\, old towel\, papers to print on – fine delicate papers will fall apart\, so look for something a little robust that can handle multiple immersions in water.\n\n\nAt least 2 backing boards of some kind – bigger than your paper. The backing boards can be anything that retain their rigidity – perspex\, hard plastic\, plywood etc.\n\n\n3 sheets of glass/perspex the same size as your backing boards – tape edges for safety.  You could buy three old and similar sized frames at an op-shop that will give you the glass and boards.\n\n\nBroad brush to spread the chemical.\n\n\nAt least 8 large bulldog clips. You can purchase these cheaply at stores such as Shiploads.\n\n\nYour own botanicals\, stencils or other items to create an image. Doilies and lace are great.\n\n\nPlease wear old clothes and bring your own lunch\, mug\, and tea and coffee makings.\n\nMargaret will supply the following\n\nChemicals\nWater baths\, chemical baths\nCling wrap\, turmeric\, salt (fine and crystal)\, vinegar spray and bubbles\nHair dryers\nWax\nComprehensive notes for dry\, wet and layered processes.\n\n\nTickets on sale Thursday 21 October 2021. If you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the small membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy. \nHow to find the Colour Circle Studio \n\n

SUMMARY:Komebukuro - a lost bag making skill - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Sadly we have had to cancel Sarah’s workshop due to insufficient registered participants. A full refund will be made to those who had booked a ticket.\nWe apologise for the inconvenience.\n  \nKomebukuro – rice (Kome) – bag (bukuro).\nKomebukuro are Japanese cotton drawstring bags\, which were traditionally used to carry rice offerings to the temples or shrines during important ceremonies or days. They were also used to hold a gift\, for a special person for significant events. \nJoin Sarah O’Halloran from the Little Japanese Haberdashery as she teaches the lost art of making the Komebukuro. \nSays Sarah: “I have never come across this particular method of assembling a bag. Since learning this technique\, I see why it was used to make a Komebukuro and how it improves the bag’s structure.” \nCopyright: Sarah O’Halloran \n\nSession 1:   10:00-12:30 Sunday 7 November – Preparing the outer fabric\nWhat you need to bring:\n\nFabric scraps – for the komebukuro outside fabric. Preferably cotton or other natural material fabric. A mixture of plain\, patterned and textured fabric is fine. There is vintage cotton kimono fabric for sale in the shop.\n\n\nFabric scissors and thread snippers\n\n\nPen/pencil to write notes.\n\n* You will need to take your piece home to finish the stitching * \n\nSession 2:   10:00-12:30 Sunday 14 November – Constructing your bag by hand or machine (will be much easier with a sewing machine)\nWhat you need to bring:\n\nOutside piece completed\n\n\nFabric pieces pre cut\n\n\nFabric scissors and thread snippers\n\n\nSewing machine (in good working order – ready to sew)\n\n\nIf you hand stitch – needle and thread to do so\n\n  \nSarah will provide the following\n\nFabric base and foundation fabric pre cut\n\n\nCord\, sashiko thread and needles. Using appropriate needles for this thread will make the process much more enjoyable and achieve a finish that will please your eye.\n\n\nA4 sheet with basic pattern information and stitch suggestions.\n\n  \n\nThe workshop will be at Sarah’s work space – 16 Smith Street\, North Hobart. There are accessible toilets\, a kitchenette\, plenty of standing and sitting table space for everyone and parking is easy. \nTickets on sale Thursday 7 October 2021. If you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the small membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nIf you have any questions or need more information please feel free to email Sarah. \n\n

SUMMARY:Collagraph Printing on Fabric
DESCRIPTION:Artist Nikki D’Emden will guide participants on a fun exploratory day\, making low relief collagraph plates and exploring printing effects\, mostly on fabric but paper is also a possibility.  \nA collagraph is a print made from a block that is constructed from low level collaged materials such as cardboard\, string\, lace\, glue\, split peas\, netting\, flat leaves or pasta. \nIdeally printing is done with a press\, but fabric printing is best done by hand printing with a hard roller or baren. Collagraph printing is an easy way to embellish fabric which can be then enhanced further with hand colouring\, stitching or beading. Playing with layers can also produce interesting results. \nCopyright: Nikki D’EmdenCopyright: Nikki D’EmdenCopyright: Nikki D’EmdenCopyright: Nikki D’EmdenCopyright: Nikki D’EmdenCopyright: Nikki D’EmdenCopyright: Nikki D’Emden\nHow to find the Colour Circle Studio \n  \n
