SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Upcycled Collage and Stitch Books
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a day of exploring and playing with collage and stitch! \nWe’ve been inspired by Danish textile and mixed media artist Lisbeth Degn and her delightful little stitch books. Lisbeth’s stitch books are built upon recycled children’s books (small books\, no larger than 10x10cm)\, collaged with Lisbeth’s own mono/gelli printed papers and filled with some of her favourite hand stitches. \nJoin in the fun of working on a little stitch book like this one Lisbeth Degn has made. If you came to our January Explore Day\, you could use some of your gelli-printed papers for backgrounds (or bring along other painted or printed papers in your stash that you’d like to use up). \nWhile we’re on the theme of books….perhaps you have some favourite books about stitch you’ve discovered in an op shop? Perhaps you’ve made little stitch books yourself? Bring them along to share! \nFeel free to work on your own projects if you prefer. \n\nMore inspiration from Lisbeth Degn \n\nA little stitch book (10×10 cm) based on an old children’s book. Gelli prints on a collaged background. An experiment to see how much variation you can get out of just a running stitch or a seed stitch.\n\n\nAnother little stitch book (10x10cm old children’s book). Collaged with mono printed papers and filled with some of Lisbeth’s favourite stitches.\n\nAnd you can view Lisbeth Degn’s other YouTube videos as well for loads of inspiration! \n\nWhat to bring \n\na small children’s book from an op shop (a book that has “seen better days” but is still structurally sound is perfect)\nsome mono-printed or painted papers\nyour favourite collage glue and a brush (alternatively a glue stick)\nall the usual sewing gear\, scissors\, needles\, threads etc\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the KWC ($20 until June 30\, then $40pa) is welcome to join our Sundays at no extra cost. Check here for details on how to join the KWC. \nHow to find Kingborough Women’s Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Additional Workshop: Paper as Textile with Anzara Clark
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand we have scheduled a second workshop.\nBook now for this very popular event!\nCurrently based in Ballarat\, Anzara Clark is an award winning\, multi-disciplinary artist whose work explores various types of textiles\, paper\, and recycled material manipulations\, overlaid with textile process interventions and integrated printmaking techniques. Her work is tactile\, textural\, dimensional\, and narrative\, seeking a poetic aesthetic in the creative process and in the objects she makes. Initially working in textiles\, awards for her paper wearable art led her to develop a fascination with paper as a textile and embark on an immersive and ongoing journey into the creative possibilities of paper. Explorations of contemporary and traditional paper knowledge and endless curiosity underpin her ongoing creative experimentation with paper\, seeking innovative ways of using this age-old material. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/anzaraclarkartist\n\nPaper as Textile: Techniques and approaches for paper sculptural and garment forms\, dimensional paper objects and paper wearable art\nIn this 2-day workshop we will consider different approaches and technique responses to the challenges involved in working with paper as a textile. We will explore foundation skills and a range of paper manipulation processes that will allow your creative inspiration to take flight\, knowing that your paper artworks will stand up to creative extensions and experimentation\, as well as stresses of installation\, exhibition and competition formats. \nWe will learn to incorporate experimentation and engineering interventions into construction approaches and build a knowledge base that will encompass traditional and contemporary processes\, enhance creative options and honour the amazing material that is paper. \nSpecifically\, we will learn to: \n\nHarness the tensions and challenges in the material nature of paper;\nIncrease durability of paper materials;\nEnhance the strength of papers without compromising flexibility and softness;\nEmbed durability into construction processes;\nUnderstand weight bearing stressors and how to counteract weight impacts in specific regions of an artwork;\nCreate light-weight form support for artwork components requiring specific shapes;\nUnderstand how to select and strengthen suspension points and other point load sites in an artwork to ensure that it is prepared for exhibition and installation requirements.\n\nThe workshop is suitable for anyone interested in using paper more innovatively in their current creative practice or branching out into new creative paper adventures\, whether that be dimensional paper forms\, soft paper sculpture\, paper garment forms or paper wearable art. \nInspiration from Azara\n\nPlease note: \n\nA list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Let's Explore Gelli Printing
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a Sunday away from it all! \nYou may want to work on your own project or do some gelli printing on paper. In March we plan to explore collage and stitch in using a repurposed children’s book inspired by this YouTube. So this is the ideal opportunity to work towards the stitch book by creating gelli-printed collage papers for the backgrounds. \nAlternatively you may like to try printing on fabric. Finer weave fabrics work best –  cotton or silk\, ironed to remove major wrinkles. \n\nWhat to bring \n\nAcrylic paints – any brand (or if you wish to print on fabric – water-soluble printing ink\, fabric paint or acrylics mixed with a textile or gel medium. Oil-based inks are not advised.)\nYour gelliplate or home made gelatine plate. Stitching and Beyond member Sally has generously shared her instructions to make your own gelatine plate.\nLight coloured papers – regular copy paper\, rice paper\, tissue paper etc (or/and fabrics to experiment with – fabrics are better if finer weave –  cotton or silk – and ironed)\nA few polystyrene trays or plastic plates for mixing colours\, plastic spoons\nSome mark making tools of your choice. Other ideas: grasses\, flat leaves\, feathers\, stencils\, old lace … the cheap kitchen tool section at tip shops is a great source for odd shapes and textures –  pastry brushes\, potato mashers\,  etc etc\nA flat surface for rolling the paint or ink onto the roller or brayer.  A plastic palette\, ice cream container lid\, butcher’s paper or even aluminium foil can be used.\nA firm brayer (or metal spoon or empty wine bottle or baren)\nMasking tape\nNewspaper\nPlastic or a garbage bag opened out to protect your work area and another to take home your rubbish\nOld clothes\, gloves (your choice here)\, towel – all those practical things!\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\n\nYour inspiration \nCheck out YouTube videos on gelli printing. \n\nSuppliers \nFor those keen on fabric printing\, Permaset paints work well and Kraftcolour (online) sells a great range which has less odour. Or check out these local suppliers for alternative fabric printing mediums: \nPrue Quarmby (Bibiani in Ferntree – Prue’s contact: 0409391426\, bibiani@bigpond.com)\nAdArt (North Hobart)\nArtery (City)\nSpotlight (Glenorchy) \n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the KWC ($20 until June 30\, then $40pa) is welcome to join our Sundays at no extra cost. Check here for details on how to join the KWC. \nHow to find Kingborough Women’s Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Let's Explore... Procion tray dye fabrics and threads
DESCRIPTION:Like all of our “Let’s Explore…” days\, this is a day for us to play and learn from each other. No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \n  \n\nPlaying with Dye on Fabric and Threads \nCome along and enjoy experimenting with some simple but exciting ideas of applying dye to fabric and thread. Dyes\, salt\, urea\, soda ash are all provided. \nThis is a totally weather dependent day! For a lot of what we plan to do\, we rely on being able to be outside. If the weather is awful\, we will do some limited inside dyeing\, but do bring some other textile based activities for those spare moments. \nWear old clothes and shoes\, bring what you can from the list and bring your stitch or baskets\, sketchbooks\, lino to carve\, or whatever\, as there will be idling time along the way to sit\, chat and stitch while the dye works its magic. \n  \n \n  \n  \nAvoid yardage or thickly woven fabrics please – we are working with experimenting. Limited sizes are more suitable today so there are enough prepared dyes for everyone. \n  \n  \n  \nThings to dye  \n\nPieces of washed natural fabrics (no synthetics) white or pale colours\, although commercially printed fabric with paler coloured backgrounds can be interesting -check out the op shops and deconstruct garments! You’ll never know until you try! What if….!\n\n\nWhite or pale natural fibre threads of various weights that you ultimately would like to use in your stitching.\nNatural fibres best for today include cotton\, rayon\, bamboo\, viscose\, tencel\, linen\, modal.\n\nUseful things \n\nan old towel\nrubber gloves\nkitty litter trays or old ice cream containers\na few glass jars\, 300 – 500 ml size\na few disposable cups\nscissors\na few disposable spoons\nplastic bags or bucket for taking home wet\, dyed fabric/thread\npen and paper (some extra notes will be emailed to participants after the day)\n\n  \n\nDo bring your lunch (although there are several food outlets nearby). Milk is provided but bring your own tea/coffee.\n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct deposit if you don’t have cash).\n\n  \n\nHave you dyed your own fabrics or threads before? For this day to be a success\, please bring along previous experiments or samples to share any experience you have. \nHaven’t done this before? Come along with what you have to explore.  People are always generous and will help fill in the gaps of knowledge or materials. \nPlease note: non-members will need to join us to be covered by insurance. \nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms

SUMMARY:The Art of Surprise with Joy Allison
DESCRIPTION:Surprise!! Pages that go Pop!\nMany people love surprises that amuse\, celebrate or intrigue! Pop-up cards and books are an ideal medium for providing fun\, pleasure\, the unexpected as well as learning. \nWhen we open the seemingly dormant and flattened page/s of a pop-up card or book\, in a moment of touch\, structures\, shapes and images appear to move\, be transformed and occupy space. Magic appears to happen. \nImaginative and interactive elements such as floating layers\, tabs\, flaps\, rivets\, folds\, cut paper and spinning wheels immerse us in a tactile\, kinetic and memorable experience\, which often gives the reader a good feeling and leave us questioning ‘Wow\, HOW did they do that?!” \nThe aim of this workshop is to do just that. It provides an opportunity to adventure into learning how to “unpack” various pop-up techniques\, as well as creating\, designing and modifying mechanisms that add both dimension and produce movement within a two-dimensional format (i.e.\, book or card). \nYour pages will flip\, flop and flap! \nLet’s have fun making your ideas and images come to life using pop-up elements. The art of surprise is waiting for you! \n\nThis workshop is held over three Sundays (2\, 16 & 30 October) from 10am-3pm.\nLilac-breasted roller © Joy Allison \nWe will experiment with various pop-up features\, including movements on separate pages/pieces of paper. These may look like cards before they are assembled. When you construct your book format\, you have the flexibility to omit\, change and rearrange the pages (cards) in the order that you like. Some “pages” may remain as cards and not find themselves in your actual book. \nOn the last day/session\, we will make the book covers to suit the shape and number of your pages. Some people may work on a square format whilst others may prefer the portrait orientation. \nIt’s important that you come on day one prepared with a theme and collage pieces to work on. These will act as starting points and prompts on your various pages. \nYou might have a holiday or a journey that you think needs assembling in a creative way\, memories that you wish to collate and cherish or something purely imaginative that will unfold. It’s up to you. \nThe theme is yours! It is important you have images/elements to “play” or experiment with\, which are of interest you. \n\nYou will need to bring\n\nCard/card stock – 220 to 300 gsm (A4 or 30 X 30 cm) various types and amounts. They will be used as your base pages\, for constructing pop-up mechanisms as well as decorating. You can generally get these at Spotlight and Shiploads.\n\nWhite – approx. 20 sheets. These will be the base and the support for the mechanisms.\nPlain colours – colours of your choice\, may include silver and gold\nPatterned\nPrinted images\n\n\n\n\nCollage material – e.g. photographs\, maps\, small pieces of coloured paper (i.e. offcuts) – visit your stash! These can be focal\, interest points or background elements on your pages.\n\n\nBook-making materials\n\nbox-board or mount-board for covers x 2 (each 25 x 20 cm)\nbook cloth (or alternative cloth/paper) for covers (1m x 30cm)\nbone folder\n\n\n\n\nDrawing and colouring tools/media\n\nsketchbook for planning and experimenting\npencils – HB\, 2B\, 4B\neraser\nsharpener\nruler and/or metal ruler\ncompass\nprotractor\nset square\nembossing tool (fine)\nblack biro/pen\ncoloured pencils\nmarkers – e.g. sharpies\nsmall coloured stamp pads – ( e.g. black\, navy blue\, sepia and colours to go with your papers (Kaisercraft)\nwhite gel pen\n\n\n\n\nCutting and pasting tools\n\nscissors\nstanley knife and/or stencil knife\ncircle (compass) cutter (Shiploads)\ncutting board/mat\nglue – PVA or EVA glue & brushes for gluing\nglue stick\ndouble-sided tape\nlow-tack masking tape (eg. purple painters tape at Bunnings)\nsmall split pins (approx. 10)\npaper clips\n\n\n\n\nVarious other bits\n\nplastic sheet to protect table-top\nsmall bag for your rubbish\nhand wipes\nnewspaper or junk mail\ncontainer for water (to clean glue brushes)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the small membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy. \nPlease note: Attendees will be emailed the venue address closer to the workshop.

SUMMARY:Let's Explore... Basketry techniques
DESCRIPTION:Like all of our “Let’s Explore…” days\, this is a day for us to play and learn from each other. No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \nPlease feel free to bring whatever you want to work on if you don’t want to play around with basketry techniques. \n\nA day to explore basketry techniques \nThe traditional art of basketry makes use of natural materials\, including young twigs from trees and shrubs like willow\, plant roots\, grape or honeysuckle vines\, and a wide variety of grasses.  Various methods include weaving\, twining and coiling. \nMany textile artists use these techniques to create texture and interest in their work. Come along to explore the options and perhaps make a small coiled and stitched textile vessel! \n\nYour inspiration \n\nA Google search on textile basketry will reveal great images and inspiration!\nTextileArtist.org is particularly good for ideas of techniques and materials other artists use.\nInterview with Polly Pollock on her unconventional basketry\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCoiled baskets \nStitching and Beyond member\, Josephine\, has kindly offered to share her techniques for coiling with textiles. These are examples of the two styles of basket she has made: \ncoiled \ncoiled and stitched \n\n\n\nMaterials to bring \n\nSome sort of rope to use as a core – Josephine uses cotton cord\, but anything you have available is fine.\nFabric scraps cut into strips to wind around the core. For stitched baskets woven fabric is better\, but old t-shirts can be turned into yarn to make a chunkier basket.\nScissors\nEmbroidery thread\, string or yarn for the stitched basket\nNeedles:\n\nFor the chunkier basket a blunt-tipped needle like a tapestry needle\, with a very large eye to thread the fabric through\nFor the stitched basket a sharper needle with a big eye\, like a darning needle.\n\n\nJosephine will bring along some materials to share!\n\n\n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct deposit if you don’t have cash)\nLunch and tea/coffee makings (there are places to buy food and drink close by)\n\n\n\n\nHave you worked with basketry techniques? Evolon? Tyvek? Lutrador? Shapewell of various weights?\nFelt? Plastic? Bottle caps? Metals of various weights? Coke cans?\nPellon? Vilene of various weights\, right up to pelmet weight? Rug canvas? Misty fuse? Water soluble fabrics?\nFabrics that you melt with a small soldering iron (eg those retro chiffon scarves and others)\, chocolate wrappers…..\nWhat else? \nWhat’s been your glue/spray/heat gun experience? \n\nCan you bring some samples along so we can touch them and think/talk about possibilities? Or maybe bring something you have made and share how you have used these different textiles? \nCan you find ideas to share in any of your books? \nLet’s see if together we can answer any questions and explore some new ideas. \nWith respect to those who are allergic to smells and things\, it may be best if we keep things like glues\, sprays and soldering irons just to talk about rather than use inside. If it’s a fine day\, there’s always space outside! \n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct deposit if you don’t have cash). \n\nPlease note: non-members will need to join us to be covered by insurance. \n\nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Printmaking using Botany\, Stencil and Stitching
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Wace\, a printmaker with 20 years’ experience\, creates intimate direct prints from the flora of Tasmania and large-scale dry-point etchings and fabric designs based on Tasmania’s native botany. She has recently completed a Churchill Fellowship to Europe\, researching the Tasmanian botanical collections made by early French explorers to develop new designs for fabric production from Tasmanian Flora. \nIn this intimate 7-person workshop\, you will experience a stimulating environment in which to creatively explore mono-print and mark making techniques for printing on paper\, using found\, botanical and hand-cut stencils.  You will explore ways to incorporate stitching by machine or by hand into the printed work. To bring your own interest into the story of the stencil elements\, you will be encouraged to write some poetry\, a story or some words to incorporate into the print or in stitch. Deborah will provide guided discussion\, explaining key concepts to the processes involved in printmaking whilst you create new artwork and gather skills. Mono-printing is one of the most painterly\, direct and exciting printmaking techniques. \nYou will get a lot done during this workshop with access to two printing presses\, using some of Deborah’s printed fabric offcuts and your own sewing machine or hand stitching kit. You will also learn printing methods to use easily at home without a press. \nWhat you need to bring: \n\npressed plants\, feathers\, lace or fabric elements to use as stencils – please start collecting these now\nsewing machine or hand stitching tools\, materials and thread\napron\n\nWhat Deborah will provide: \n\nall printmaking materials\na simple vegetarian lunch and salad plus wine.  Please email Deb if you have any dietary restrictions she needs to be aware of. \n\n  \nCopyright: Deb WaceCopyright: Deb WaceCopyright: Deb WaceCopyright: Deb WaceCopyright: Deb WaceCopyright: Deb WaceCopyright: Deb Wace\nIf you would like to see more examples\, check out the Facebook album of Deborah’s demonstration prints and student work. \nDeborah’s fabric design studio and gallery is located next door to her Print Press & Draw studio. See her work here. \n\nDirections to Deborah Wace Print\, Press and Draw Studio\n9th floor\, 65 Murray Street\, above Bett Gallery\, on corner of Liverpool and Murray Streets\, HOBART CBD. \nParking\nThere is no unmetered parking available near the studio\, but there is an elevator. ** We have been given permission to use about half a dozen nearby car spaces\, although car pooling may be helpful. If you choose to use a sewing machine\, it can be dropped off prior to parking.  Once you have registered we will email participants with the exact details.** \n\nTickets on sale Thursday 30 September 2021. SUMMARY:Eco dyeing with Linda Chee in Franklin
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a workshop in Linda Chee’s own studio\, surrounded by her creativity and looking out over magical vistas of the Huon River. \nLinda is a Eucalyptus dye specialist who works with protein-based fibres such as wool\, silk\, cashmere and alpaca. \nThe day begins exploring Linda’s background and why she chooses to be a Eucalyptus specialist. Following\, you will be given a pair of wool socks with which you will explore the keystone knowledge to dye successfully using Tasmanian Eucalypts. You will also create a small piece of jewellery using dyed remnants and hand stitching. \nDuring the workshop you will consider design\, placement\, mordants\, effects of pot and core used which affects the results. \nThroughout the day\, discussion and questions are addressed as you document ideas and learning. 35 years of teaching means you will be kept busy all day. Linda recognises that each person learns in their own way.  It’s about being “hands on”\, having fun and going home with your own creation. \nLinda provides a delicious morning tea. Then later\, while all your socks are patterning in the dye baths\, we wander off for lunch in Franklin and Linda keeps a careful tutor’s eye on what is happening as the fibres and leaves do their magic in the pots. On return you extend your learning. \nAnd there’s afternoon tea…. \nThe shop will be open at the end of the workshop in case you want to take home a hand dyed treasure (cards accepted). \nA delightful opportunity to learn so much! \n\nWhat you need to bring\n\napron and/or gloves (optional)\n\n\ncash or card to purchase lunch in Franklin\n\n\nwear suitable footwear to explore the eucalypts grown for dyeing\n\n\nwear layers of clothing – warm clothes needed for the wet studio\, while the making studio is warm!\n\n\nWhat Linda will provide\n\nwool socks for dyeing\n\n\nmorning and afternoon tea\n\n\nStudio - Linda CheeProcess - Linda CheeWearable - Linda Chee\nIf you would like to see more of Linda’s work\, check out her website \n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy. \n\n

SUMMARY:Let's Explore... monotypes
DESCRIPTION:Like all of our “Let’s Explore…” days\, this is a day for us to play and learn from each other. No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \nPlease feel free to bring whatever you want to work on if you don’t want to play around with monotypes. \n\nA monotype is a hand printed ‘painting’. It is a print made by hand\, by ‘painting’ inks onto a smooth surface such as a perspex sheet\, a smooth table mat from the dollar shop\, a thick piece of plastic like you can buy off the roll from Spotlight\, or a gelli plate you may have made or purchased. You then transfer the marks/painting onto paper or fabric to produce one of a kind images that can  be used in your work in various ways. \nHave you tried monotype printing? For this day to be a success\, please bring along previous experiments or samples to share any experience you have. \nHaven’t done this before? Come along with what you have to explore.  People are always generous and will help fill in the gaps of knowledge or materials. \n\nWhat to bring \n\nWater-soluble printing ink or fabric paint. Permaset paints work well with this technique and Kraftcolour (online) sells a great range which has less odour.  You can use acrylics but they tend to stiffen fabric unless you mix them with a textile or gel medium. Oil-based inks are not advised.\nA piece of Perspex or taped glass\, OR a piece of smooth thick plastic (Spotlight) OR the smooth back of a plastic dollar-shop placemat OR your gelliplate OR home made gelatine plate. You do not need a gelliplate\, but if you want to make one\, Sally has generously shared her instructions.\nPapers and fabrics to experiment with – fabrics are better if finer weave –  cotton or silk – and ironed\nA few polystyrene trays or plastic plates for mixing colours\, plastic spoons\nSome mark making tools of your choice. A plastic palette\, ice cream container lid\, butcher’s paper or even aluminium foil can be used.\nA firm brayer  (or metal spoon or empty wine bottle or baren)\nMasking tape\nNewspaper\nPlastic or a garbage bag opened out to protect your work area and another to take home your rubbish\nOld clothes\, gloves (your choice here)\, towel – all those practical things!\n\n\n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct transfer if you don’t have cash)\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\nPlease note: non-members will need to join us to be covered by insurance. \n\nYour inspiration \nCheck out YouTube videos on monotype printmaking.\nExplore printmakers like Linda Germain for insights and ideas. \nStitching and Beyond member Sally has kindly shared a recipe to make your own gelatine plate for monotype printmaking. \n\nSuppliers \nPrue Quarmby (Bibiani in Ferntree – Prue’s contact: 0409391426\, bibiani@bigpond.com)\nAdArt (North Hobart)\nArtery (City)\nSpotlight (Glenorchy)\nKraftcolour online \n\nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Let's Explore... photo transfer of images
DESCRIPTION:Like all of our “Let’s Explore…” days\, this is a day for us to play and learn from each other. No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \nPlease feel free to bring whatever you want to work on if you don’t want to play around with photo transfer. \n\nTransferred images can add layers of interest\, mystery or texture to your work\, and can be achieved in a variety of ways. There are many methods\, and whole books have been written on the subject. Some simple methods include: \n\nGel medium or gesso using an inkjet print\nPVA glue and magazine or newsprint images\nFabric crayons (e.g. Crayola)\n\n\nMany current Stitching and Beyond members have used image transfer in their work. \nLjilja has done a lot of photo transfer using a very simple method and suggests to bring the following if you want to give it a try. \n\nInkjet photocopies (These can be drawn into before or after the transfer\,  if desired.)  Black and white images with strong contrasts work better than coloured photocopies.  Coloured ones still work but look a bit faded\, though that might be the effect you want.\nGolden Matte Medium\, or Mod Podge  (for metal transfers Ljilja prefers Tiger Grip)\nFabric – calico or white cotton.  Organza – light coloured.  Metal eg copper shim\, aluminium can.\nA brayer if you have one\nIron and a towel\nSpray bottle for water\nScissors\, drawing gear (optional)\nMagazines\, other print to experiment \n2 garbage bags\, one to protect your work surface and one to take home your rubbish\nPen\, pencil\, notebook\, masking tape\, a newspaper – all those things you may find useful on the day!\n\nHave you used any image transfer methods? For this day to be a success\, please bring along previous experiments or samples to share any experience you have. \nHaven’t done this before? Come along with what you have to explore. People are always generous and will help fill in the gaps of knowledge or materials. \n\nWhat else to bring \n\n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct transfer if you don’t have cash)\n\n\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\nPlease note: non-members will need to join us to be covered by insurance. \n\nYour inspiration \nJoan Schulze was the first person to bring the idea of photo transfer to Tasmania in the 80s. Her quilts are created by combining photo-transfer processes and paint with the cottons and silks more commonly associated with quilt making. New processes lead her to new ideas\, and new ideas lead to new processes\, such as the alternative photographic processes she’s adapted for her own uses over the years. \nCollage is Joan’s favourite way to think and work. Collect\, cut up\, layer\, glue\, paint\, reposition\, cut again\, photograph\, print\, add\, subtract—until the materials and ideas become something greater than the original impulse to begin. \n\nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Printing – wet and layered methods
DESCRIPTION:Now re-scheduled to a new date. Hooray!\nTickets still available. Book now to avoid disappointment. \n\nDue to popular demand\, local artist\, Margaret Jones is offering a second cyanotype printing workshop. \nCyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings\, referred to as blueprints. The process uses two chemicals: ferric ammonium and potassium ferricyanide. The chemicals react with UV light – a sunny day is great but a cloudy day is good too! \nMargaret will guide you through experimentation with the wet process to produce single images and a layered method that adds dimension and interest. \nThe images of student work from Margaret’s first workshop show results that can be achieved using botanicals and lace. \n\nMaterials you need to bring\n\nApron\, gloves\, old towel\, papers to print on – fine delicate papers will fall apart\, so look for something a little robust that can handle multiple immersions in water.\n\n\nAt least 2 backing boards of some kind – bigger than your paper. The backing boards can be anything that retain their rigidity – perspex\, hard plastic\, plywood etc.\n\n\n3 sheets of glass/perspex the same size as your backing boards – tape edges for safety.  You could buy three old and similar sized frames at an op-shop that will give you the glass and boards.\n\n\nBroad brush to spread the chemical.\n\n\nAt least 8 large bulldog clips. You can purchase these cheaply at stores such as Shiploads.\n\n\nYour own botanicals\, stencils or other items to create an image. Doilies and lace are great.\n\n\nPlease wear old clothes and bring your own lunch\, mug\, and tea and coffee makings.\n\nMargaret will supply the following\n\nChemicals\nWater baths\, chemical baths\nCling wrap\, turmeric\, salt (fine and crystal)\, vinegar spray and bubbles\nHair dryers\nWax\nComprehensive notes for dry\, wet and layered processes.\n\n\nTickets on sale now. \nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the small membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy. \nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms \n\n
