DESCRIPTION:Yet another opportunity to learn eco-printing on leather with the talented Lindy Whitton.\nBook now for this very popular and unique experience!\n\nEco Print on Leather – Natural\, Crisp and Beautiful\nThis workshop will cover all you need to know to create natural\, crisp and beautiful botanic prints on leather. Topics covered include: \n\ntypes of leather and which to use\nhow to mordant leather\, recipes\nwhich leaves print best\nusing natural dye blankets\nusing iron blankets\nhow to bundle\nsteam or simmer?\ndrying the leather\nconditioning the leather – which products to use\nuses for printed leather\n\nThe day will be a mix of discussion and hands on printing. You will make some tester samples to explore leaves and dye blankets and then move on to make one or two larger prints. \nAt the end of the day you will take home the full kangaroo hide printed in several sections and be able to use it for projects such as shoe making\, bookbinding \, purse\, wallet\, clutch etc. \n\nMaterials supplied by Lindy (a materials fee of $35 is included in the workshop price)\n\nA full kangaroo leather hide per person ( approx. 5 square feet)\n\n\nMordant buckets and mordant chemicals\n\n\nNatural Dyes and dye blankets\n\n\nTubes for bundling\n\n\nVessels for steaming/simmering\n\n\nVarious leaves\n\n\nYou will need to bring\n\nSelection of fresh or dried leaves/flowers – good printers are maple\, rose\, cotinus and sycamore leaves\, and for flowers\, coreopsis dahlias\, cosmos\, chrysanthimum and gerbera\n\n\nSheet of recycled plastic to use when bundling the leaves and leather( please\, no cling wrap). You could use a recycled dry cleaning bag\, recyclable garbage bin liner\, large plastic bag etc. It should be at least 40 cm wide and 1.2 m long but you can combine sections to make this.\n\n\nDrying board and some push pins. Used for drying the wet leather and can be anything that you can push the pins into eg chipboard\, coreflute etc. Approx. 40x60cm should be fine.\n\n\nElastic bandage or 2 inch wide strips of stretch cotton. Her inspiration is always the environment and although the imagery is abstract in nature\, that echo remains. The alchemy of materials and how they can be utilised to produce art has always fascinated her. This can come about in many forms and sees prosaic materials being used for purposes for which they were never intended. Texture\, tone and line always appear in her work which creates visual excitement. \nShe is a collector of “What Ifs”. Her earliest art making was in Ceramics and Watercolour which have evolved into painting\, printmaking and mixed-media. DESCRIPTION:Our biennial Out of Hand exhibition is on again in 2023 with a wonderful collection of fibre\, paper and textile artworks created by the members of Stitching and Beyond. The exhibition is always exceptional with a curated collection of works of all shapes\, sizes\, textures and colours. You can expect to see 2D and 3D works and there is bound to be something of interest for everyone! \nOur Annual Challenge pieces from 2022 (Threads of Life) and our 2023 Challenge pieces (Under the Microscope) are also on display. Choose one medium and explore all the different marks that can be made with it or try a variety of media and see what marks can be made with one implement. \nThese exploratory pieces could be used for stitch ideas\, collage\, sketchbook page backgrounds or just about anything your creative minds can think of! \n \nFeel free to work on your own projects if you prefer. SUMMARY:Colour Play with Leah Higgins
DESCRIPTION:Leah Higgins is an internationally exhibited textile artist\, author and tutor based in Manchester. Her art has developed from a life-long love of working with textile and stitch. Many of her large abstract quilts are inspired by man-made buildings and industrial structures that shape the urban landscape around her home. Working in series\, Leah has focussed on those industries and industrial buildings that no longer exist as well as those whose buildings have been repurposed and still exist today. More recently the process of ‘making’ has become a source of inspiration. In an uncertain world Leah has found that the physical processes of printing\, cutting and stitching bring comfort and a renewed sense of purpose. \nHer creative process starts with colour and mark. She works directly onto fabric often utilising breakdown\, or deconstructed\, printing to create a cohesive collection of fabrics characterised by dense mark and complex\, often neutral colours. Her fabrics are then cut\, collaged and pieced before being layered and quilted. DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a day of exploring and playing with collage and stitch! \nWe’ve been inspired by Danish textile and mixed media artist Lisbeth Degn and her delightful little stitch books. Lisbeth’s stitch books are built upon recycled children’s books (small books\, no larger than 10x10cm)\, collaged with Lisbeth’s own mono/gelli printed papers and filled with some of her favourite hand stitches. \nJoin in the fun of working on a little stitch book like this one Lisbeth Degn has made. If you came to our January Explore Day\, you could use some of your gelli-printed papers for backgrounds (or bring along other painted or printed papers in your stash that you’d like to use up). \nWhile we’re on the theme of books….perhaps you have some favourite books about stitch you’ve discovered in an op shop? Perhaps you’ve made little stitch books yourself? SUMMARY:Eco Print on Leather with Lindy Whitton
DESCRIPTION:Due to illness\, this workshop has been re-scheduled to February 2023.\nApologies for any inconvenience.\n\nEco Print on Leather – Natural\, Crisp and Beautiful\nThis workshop will cover all you need to know to create natural\, crisp and beautiful botanic prints on leather. Topics covered include: \n\ntypes of leather and which to use\nhow to mordant leather\, recipes\nwhich leaves print best\nusing natural dye blankets\nusing iron blankets\nhow to bundle\nsteam or simmer?\ndrying the leather\nconditioning the leather – which products to use\nuses for printed leather\n\nThe day will be a mix of discussion and hands on printing. You will make some tester samples to explore leaves and dye blankets and then move on to make one or two larger prints. \nAt the end of the day you will take home the full kangaroo hide printed in several sections and be able to use it for projects such as shoe making\, bookbinding \, purse\, wallet\, clutch etc. \n  \n\nMaterials supplied by Lindy (a materials fee of $35 is included in the workshop price)\n\nA full kangaroo leather hide per person ( approx. 5 square feet)\n\n\nMordant buckets and mordant chemicals\n\n\nNatural Dyes and dye blankets\n\n\nTubes for bundling\n\n\nVessels for steaming/simmering\n\n\nVarious leaves\n\n  \nYou will need to bring\n\nSelection of fresh or dried leaves/flowers – good printers are maple\, rose\, cotinus and sycamore leaves\, and for flowers\, coreopsis dahlias\, cosmos\, chrysanthimum and gerbera\n\n\nSheet of recycled plastic to use when bundling the leaves and leather( please\, no cling wrap). You could use a recycled dry cleaning bag\, recyclable garbage bin liner\, large plastic bag etc. It should be at least 40 cm wide and 1.2 m long but you can combine sections to make this.\n\n\nDrying board and some push pins. Used for drying the wet leather and can be anything that you can push the pins into eg chipboard\, coreflute etc. Approx. 40x60cm should be fine.\n\n\nElastic bandage or 2 inch wide strips of stretch cotton. DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a Sunday away from it all! \nYou may want to work on your own project or do some gelli printing on paper. In March we plan to explore collage and stitch in using a repurposed children’s book inspired by this YouTube. So this is the ideal opportunity to work towards the stitch book by creating gelli-printed collage papers for the backgrounds. \nAlternatively you may like to try printing on fabric. Finer weave fabrics work best –  cotton or silk\, ironed to remove major wrinkles. \n\nWhat to bring \n\nAcrylic paints – any brand (or if you wish to print on fabric – water-soluble printing ink\, fabric paint or acrylics mixed with a textile or gel medium. Oil-based inks are not advised.)\nYour gelliplate or home made gelatine plate. DESCRIPTION:Like all of our “Let’s Explore…” days\, this is a day for us to play and learn from each other. No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \n  \n\nPlaying with Dye on Fabric and Threads \nCome along and enjoy experimenting with some simple but exciting ideas of applying dye to fabric and thread. Dyes\, salt\, urea\, soda ash are all provided. \nThis is a totally weather dependent day! For a lot of what we plan to do\, we rely on being able to be outside. If the weather is awful\, we will do some limited inside dyeing\, but do bring some other textile based activities for those spare moments. \nWear old clothes and shoes\, bring what you can from the list and bring your stitch or baskets\, sketchbooks\, lino to carve\, or whatever\, as there will be idling time along the way to sit\, chat and stitch while the dye works its magic. \n  \n \n  \n  \nAvoid yardage or thickly woven fabrics please – we are working with experimenting. Limited sizes are more suitable today so there are enough prepared dyes for everyone. \n  \n  \n  \nThings to dye  \n\nPieces of washed natural fabrics (no synthetics) white or pale colours\, although commercially printed fabric with paler coloured backgrounds can be interesting -check out the op shops and deconstruct garments! You’ll never know until you try! What if….!\n\n\nWhite or pale natural fibre threads of various weights that you ultimately would like to use in your stitching.\nNatural fibres best for today include cotton\, rayon\, bamboo\, viscose\, tencel\, linen\, modal.\n\nUseful things \n\nan old towel\nrubber gloves\nkitty litter trays or old ice cream containers\na few glass jars\, 300 – 500 ml size\na few disposable cups\nscissors\na few disposable spoons\nplastic bags or bucket for taking home wet\, dyed fabric/thread\npen and paper (some extra notes will be emailed to participants after the day)\n\n  \n\nDo bring your lunch (although there are several food outlets nearby). Milk is provided but bring your own tea/coffee.\n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct deposit if you don’t have cash).\n\n  \n\nHave you dyed your own fabrics or threads before? SUMMARY:The Art of Surprise with Joy Allison
DESCRIPTION:Surprise!! Pages that go Pop!\nMany people love surprises that amuse\, celebrate or intrigue! Pop-up cards and books are an ideal medium for providing fun\, pleasure\, the unexpected as well as learning. \nWhen we open the seemingly dormant and flattened page/s of a pop-up card or book\, in a moment of touch\, structures\, shapes and images appear to move\, be transformed and occupy space. Magic appears to happen. \nImaginative and interactive elements such as floating layers\, tabs\, flaps\, rivets\, folds\, cut paper and spinning wheels immerse us in a tactile\, kinetic and memorable experience\, which often gives the reader a good feeling and leave us questioning ‘Wow\, HOW did they do that?!” \nThe aim of this workshop is to do just that. It provides an opportunity to adventure into learning how to “unpack” various pop-up techniques\, as well as creating\, designing and modifying mechanisms that add both dimension and produce movement within a two-dimensional format (i.e.\, book or card). \nYour pages will flip\, flop and flap! \nLet’s have fun making your ideas and images come to life using pop-up elements. The art of surprise is waiting for you! \n\nThis workshop is held over three Sundays (2\, 16 & 30 October) from 10am-3pm.\nLilac-breasted roller © Joy Allison \nWe will experiment with various pop-up features\, including movements on separate pages/pieces of paper. These may look like cards before they are assembled. When you construct your book format\, you have the flexibility to omit\, change and rearrange the pages (cards) in the order that you like. Some “pages” may remain as cards and not find themselves in your actual book. \nOn the last day/session\, we will make the book covers to suit the shape and number of your pages. Some people may work on a square format whilst others may prefer the portrait orientation. \nIt’s important that you come on day one prepared with a theme and collage pieces to work on. These will act as starting points and prompts on your various pages. \nYou might have a holiday or a journey that you think needs assembling in a creative way\, memories that you wish to collate and cherish or something purely imaginative that will unfold. It’s up to you. \nThe theme is yours! It is important you have images/elements to “play” or experiment with\, which are of interest you. \n\nYou will need to bring\n\nCard/card stock – 220 to 300 gsm (A4 or 30 X 30 cm) various types and amounts. They will be used as your base pages\, for constructing pop-up mechanisms as well as decorating. You can generally get these at Spotlight and Shiploads.\n\nWhite – approx. 20 sheets. These will be the base and the support for the mechanisms.\nPlain colours – colours of your choice\, may include silver and gold\nPatterned\nPrinted images\n\n\n\n\nCollage material – e.g. photographs\, maps\, small pieces of coloured paper (i.e. offcuts) – visit your stash! No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \nPlease feel free to bring whatever you want to work on if you don’t want to play around with basketry techniques. \n\nA day to explore basketry techniques \nThe traditional art of basketry makes use of natural materials\, including young twigs from trees and shrubs like willow\, plant roots\, grape or honeysuckle vines\, and a wide variety of grasses.  Various methods include weaving\, twining and coiling. \nMany textile artists use these techniques to create texture and interest in their work. Come along to explore the options and perhaps make a small coiled and stitched textile vessel! \n\nYour inspiration \n\nA Google search on textile basketry will reveal great images and inspiration!\nTextileArtist.org is particularly good for ideas of techniques and materials other artists use.\nInterview with Polly Pollock on her unconventional basketry\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCoiled baskets \nStitching and Beyond member\, Josephine\, has kindly offered to share her techniques for coiling with textiles. These are examples of the two styles of basket she has made: \ncoiled \ncoiled and stitched \n\n\n\nMaterials to bring \n\nSome sort of rope to use as a core – Josephine uses cotton cord\, but anything you have available is fine.\nFabric scraps cut into strips to wind around the core. For stitched baskets woven fabric is better\, but old t-shirts can be turned into yarn to make a chunkier basket.\nScissors\nEmbroidery thread\, string or yarn for the stitched basket\nNeedles:\n\nFor the chunkier basket a blunt-tipped needle like a tapestry needle\, with a very large eye to thread the fabric through\nFor the stitched basket a sharper needle with a big eye\, like a darning needle.\n\n\nJosephine will bring along some materials to share!\n\n\n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct deposit if you don’t have cash)\nLunch and tea/coffee makings (there are places to buy food and drink close by)\n\n\n\n\nHave you worked with basketry techniques? SUMMARY:2021 Challenge Exhibition: Black and White + One
DESCRIPTION:Stitching and Beyond’s annual challenge is a travelling exhibition with the theme each year decided by a members’ poll. The entries are two-dimensional\, A3 in size and portrait orientation\, with the choice of materials entirely up to each artist. \nIn 2021 the theme was ‘Black and White + One’ with 39 entries submitted. Misty fuse? Water soluble fabrics?\nFabrics that you melt with a small soldering iron (eg those retro chiffon scarves and others)\, chocolate wrappers…..\nWhat else? \nWhat’s been your glue/spray/heat gun experience? \n\nCan you bring some samples along so we can touch them and think/talk about possibilities? No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \nPlease feel free to bring whatever you want to work on if you don’t want to play around with mixed media. \n\nA day to mix it up! \nMany textile artists use different media in their work to create texture and interest. The media used can range from textile inks and dyes\, acrylic paints\, crayons and pastels\, printing techniques\, papers\, natural and man-made found objects\, and recycled materials. \n\nYour inspiration \n\nA Google search will reveal great images and inspiration!\nThis article on 5 mixed media artists by TextileArtist.org is particularly good for ideas of materials other artists use.\nThe images below show the mixed media approach by some of Stitching and Beyond’s members.\n\n    \n\nHave you worked with mixed media? For this day to be a success\, please bring along previous experiments or samples to share any experience you have. \nHaven’t done this before? DESCRIPTION:Planning for Stitching and Beyond’s 2022 challenge is underway. This year the theme is ‘Threads of Life’. \nRegistration is open now and members can check conditions of entry and complete the registration form in the member’s area. \nRegistration must be submitted by Friday 12 August 2022\, with completed works delivered to the August Gathering in Kingston on Monday 15 August 2022. Check the entry details for alternative arrangements. \n\nEntry to the challenge each year is free to financial members of Stitching and Beyond. Non-members are very welcome to join us by firstly paying Stitching and Beyond’s annual subscription. \n\nWe have had a number of well received exhibitions of themed challenges in recent years\, including Trees\, Passages\, Circles\, Bark\, Encrustation\, The F Word\, Entwined\, The Lightbox Tags Challenge\, The Spice of Life\, Tasmanian Textures\, Emerge and Black and White + One.
