SUMMARY:Experimental Print & Stitch with Deborah Campbell
DESCRIPTION:Textiles for Deborah Campbell have always been an important element of her artistic expression and how she interprets the coastal landscape. \nDeborah’s fascination for the coast is rooted in her childhood holidays and memories of exploration. She has always been intrigued with what will be revealed round the next headland and the idea of continual change and renewal by the incoming tide. \nThe methods Deborah uses reflect her training in printed textiles. However\, in a much less technical way\, she likes the process now to be much more spontaneous and expressive\, using quite simple printing techniques like Lino\, Collagraph and Geli printing. \nDeborah works onto organza and gauze to give her the option to layer fabrics and create depth of colour and pattern. These are then constructed using free motion machine embroidery as her drawing tool\, combined with hand embroidery. The mark making through stitch is used to construct\, enhance and compliment the print. \nwww.deborahcampbell.com \n\nExperimental Print & Stitch\nThis workshop offers a place to experiment and explore different methods of printing to create your own unique fabrics which are collaged together creatively using machine and/or hand embroidery. Inspiration will come from the natural environment informing the creation of your prints using Lino\, Collagraph and Geli Printing. \nYou will create depth in your work by layering your printed fabrics and discover how to mark make & draw using different methods of stitch to embellish and construct your textile. Deborah will also show you how to add a motif in the shape of a bird or plant using machine embroidery. \nNo experience needed – all welcome. \n\nInspiration from Deborah\n\nPlease note:\n\n A full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop\n\n\n Workshop bookings are subject to our refund policy\n\n\n Finding and Parking at Moonah Arts Centre\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Kawandi
DESCRIPTION:What is Kawandi? \nIn India\, ‘Kawandi’ means quilt. It is a technique developed by the Siddis\, an African community brought to India more than 800 years ago. It is made with recycled materials\, entirely by hand. The process is engaging\, creative\, relaxed and sustainable. It is an interesting visual example of repetitive stitching\, a technique that is used to great effect in modern stitching. \nExploring Kawandi \nWe will start a small sample quilt (around 50cm wide) in order to get the hang of the technique. It could be a short table runner\, table mat\, or cushion cover size. By making a sample size on the day\, you will be able to consider a few things before attempting a larger quilt. \nThe most important thing is that both backing fabric and wadding are thin for ease of stitching. This allows for having to sew through 4 thicknesses of fabric. Soft\, drapey\, aged or even slightly worn backing fabrics are best. The backing needs to be 3-5cm larger all around than the wadding. \nPlease bring plenty of light weight cotton fabric scraps from your stash or suitable lightweight recycled fabrics! \nWe will start off stitching scraps onto the folded border and upon completion of the first row all the way around\, will insert the wadding close to the first row of stitches. \n \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n\nInspiration \nLisa will be leading our exploration into Kawandi this month. She has recommended some YouTube resources to inspire you. Lisa particularly recommends the one by Kieren Dutcher. \n\nWorks Created by Margaret Fabrizio in 2022 (atree3)\nMake a Kawandi Quilt (Kieren Dutcher)\nKawandi – Techniques & Tips for Your First Quilt (Marion’s World)\nReviving the Art of Siddi Quilts (30 Stades)\n\n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to consider bringing.  No need to purchase fabrics – just bring what you already have in your stash! \n\nDownload the list – Exploring Kawandi\nYour lunch. SUMMARY:Landscape Collage with Gloria Loughman
DESCRIPTION:Gloria Loughman was first initiated to the world of textile collage nearly 30 years ago when recovering from a course of chemotherapy. What began as therapy soon developed into a life-long passion\, giving Gloria the opportunity to travel the world exhibiting her quilts. She has won many major awards in Australia\, Europe\, Japan and the United States. Her quilt ‘Kimberley Mystique’ was the winner of Australia’s most prestigious national quilting award in 2003. Gloria has also held a number of solo exhibitions and published several books. \nLiving by the sea on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria and travelling extensively with her talented photographer husband\, Gloria is never short of inspiration. She is continually challenged to reproduce images of Australia’s unique and fascinating landscapes in fabric. Underlying all her work is a passion for colour and the ongoing challenge to capture light in her work. In more recent times\, Gloria’s work has become more abstract as she plays with pattern and colour. Her series on buildings and other facades is a result of a love of architecture and the opportunity to travel and explore\, photographing many fascinating structures. \nAs a trained teacher\, Gloria enjoys sharing her knowledge and skills with others teaching her popular classes extensively in Australia and in more than 20 countries overseas.  She likes to challenge her students to design their own quilts\, but is also happy to provide patterns for those less confident. Her commitment to teaching was acknowledged when she received the Rajah award in 2009 for ‘an outstanding contribution to Australian quilt making’. \nwww.glorialoughman.com \n\nLandscape Collage\nThe focus of this workshop is to create a landscape where the play of light and colour across the surface adds movement and perspective.  We will start by drawing out our design then selecting our colour scheme and fabrics.  We will extend our range by overpainting and sponging some commercial fabrics that have interesting prints or textures. The collage process will then be demonstrated\, and participants will work on their backgrounds. The tiles are quilted in place before the foreground details are added.  Lots of tips along the way and information about doing a faced edge is included.  Participants can use one of my patterns or work on their own designs. \nInspiration from Gloria\n\nPlease note:\n\nA full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nFinding and Parking at Moonah Arts Centre

SUMMARY:Found and Gathered with Seth Apter
DESCRIPTION:Seth Apter is a mixed media artist\, instructor\, author and designer from New York City. He came to the world of art later in life\, transitioning from a full-time career as a psychologist to being a full-time artist and maker. His artistic practice is based on the concepts of community and collaboration\, and he believes in the power of art to bring people together. \nSeth’s work is all about building layers and creating a meaningful history by integrating paper\, paint and inks\, fabric\, hand stitching\, and both personal and found objects. The core elements are typically abstract\, textural\, grungy and distressed\, colourfully muted\, deeply layered and filled with text (used both as a design element and an expression of meaning). \nwww.sethapter.com \n\nFound and Gathered\nIn this workshop we will explore creating mixed media layers through collaging with paper and fabric\, hand stitching\, painting\, inking and rusting\, surface building\, embossing\, book binding\, mark making and so much more! We will gather inside creating our pages\, as well as explore outside\, seeking found objects to use from nature. \nThis all comes together in the form of a series of mixed media booklets that\, when stacked together\, express your own personal artist voice. The project can be very personal to your own experiences or you can simply make an unthemed\, kick-ass artist book! \nInspiration from Seth\n\nPlease note: \n\nA full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\nHow to find Moonah Arts Centre \n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Totems and Talismans with Irene Manion
DESCRIPTION:Irene Manion is a multidisciplinary artist living in the Lake Macquarie area of NSW. Her daily walk involves taking her camera with a zoom lens attached and attempting to photograph every bird of interest she comes upon. Images are then stored in a large file creating a wonderful resource for Irene to develop into a design that can either be painted in watercolour or developed into a textile piece. \nIrene’s current textile practice involves manipulation of digital images in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator which\, once finished\, are dye-sublimation printed onto polyester cloth. The printed fabric is then further embroidered. Irene has evolved a unique sewing technique involving stitching long stitches using a sewing machine. She also stitches on non-traditional surfaces like plastic and Perspex to convey messages about the environment. \nWith a teaching background in textiles and visual arts\, photography and video production\, Irene has exhibited her work widely in many solo\, group and selective exhibitions. \nwww.irenemanion.com \n\nTotems and Talismans\nThis workshop invites participants to explore the full potential of transfer dyes\, also known as disperse dyes or sublistatic dyes. These dyes are unique in that they do not require immersion in water but involve painting or printing the dyes onto paper which is then heat pressed onto the fabric for the ‘transfer’ of colour to occur. Like other dyes\, these dyes leave no residue on the surface of fabric. \nTotemic and talismanic forms will appear in the transfer dying process by accident and by design. We’ll be discovering the versatility of these dyes by applying a range of experimental ways to apply the dyes from the most accidental\, through to the most controlled. This dye process can be applied to glossy\, transparent and matte fabrics of various weights. The only proviso is that there must be polyester in the fabric. \nDigital images based on photographs\, including photographs of your own hand-made designs in other media\, can all be transfer printed onto fabric. The only limitation in size is the width of the fabric that is being printed on. Some computer-generated digital designs\, pre-printed onto transfer paper\, will be provided for participants to print with. For this workshop\, however\, no specialist printing equipment will be required. The only printing device needed is the domestic iron. Once our totems and talismans are printed\, they will be machine and/or hand stitched to enhance their surface. \nThe finished item/items can be used to embellish clothing\, as fabric jewellery\, or applied to other surfaces such as personalised books or boxes\, or simply be framed/hung as a one-off image. The techniques learned will always have wider application and can be integrated into the studio practice of artists working in different ways. They can be used for free flowing abstracts or ultra realistic photographic imagery\, for sculptural or 2-dimensional work of any size. \nInspiration from Irene\n\nPlease note:\n\nThe fee includes some materials supplied by the tutor.\n\n\nA full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Expect the Unexpected with Gaye Nieuwenhof
DESCRIPTION:Please note change of venue and dates.\n\n\nGaye Nieuwenhof has been creating and exhibiting her work for many years along with teaching various techniques to help inspire others to accept the unexpected. Her inspiration is always the environment and although the imagery is abstract in nature\, that echo remains. The alchemy of materials and how they can be utilised to produce art has always fascinated her. This can come about in many forms and sees prosaic materials being used for purposes for which they were never intended. Texture\, tone and line always appear in her work which creates visual excitement. \nShe is a collector of “What Ifs”. Her earliest art making was in Ceramics and Watercolour which have evolved into painting\, printmaking and mixed-media. Always searching for the unexpected and accepting that not all work will be pleasing\, but forever learning from the experience. \nwww.gayenieuwenhof.com \n\nExpect the Unexpected\nA mixed-media workshop on both fabric and paper with collage and some slow stitching. A Gel plate will be utilised in ways that may not have been experienced before. Prepare to be challenged to free your inner critic and celebrate your visual voice. You will learn to recognise what it is that you really want to express and how that can change when you are free to experiment. This workshop is about letting go of control to experience the joy of learning something new about both materials and yourself. Suitable for both beginners and experienced alike. \nInspiration from Gaye\n\nPlease note: \n\nThe workshop fee includes some materials.\n\n\nA full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nHow to Find the Art Studio at the Friends School

SUMMARY:Colour Play with Leah Higgins
DESCRIPTION:Leah Higgins is an internationally exhibited textile artist\, author and tutor based in Manchester. Her art has developed from a life-long love of working with textile and stitch. Many of her large abstract quilts are inspired by man-made buildings and industrial structures that shape the urban landscape around her home. Working in series\, Leah has focussed on those industries and industrial buildings that no longer exist as well as those whose buildings have been repurposed and still exist today. More recently the process of ‘making’ has become a source of inspiration. In an uncertain world Leah has found that the physical processes of printing\, cutting and stitching bring comfort and a renewed sense of purpose. \nHer creative process starts with colour and mark. She works directly onto fabric often utilising breakdown\, or deconstructed\, printing to create a cohesive collection of fabrics characterised by dense mark and complex\, often neutral colours. Her fabrics are then cut\, collaged and pieced before being layered and quilted. In some pieces she uses stitch\, fused applique or additional layers of print to reference specific sources of inspiration. \nwww.leahhiggins.co.uk \n\nColour Play: Low-Tech Screen Printing with Temporary Resists\nIn this workshop you will learn how to predict and control colour when using Procion reactive dyes\, before experimenting with a range of simple screen printing techniques to create your own palette of fabric from your own source of inspiration. \nThe techniques covered will include open screening for both clean and streaky colour\, working with paper and string resists\, working with masking tape resists and breakdown printing where thickened dyes are used as a temporary resist. \nThe workshop is suitable for beginners and for those who want better control of their screen printing outcomes. \nInspiration from Leah\n\nPlease note: \n\nThe workshop fee includes all dyes and auxiliaries.\n\n\nA list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\n\nTicket sales close 7 April 2023.\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nHow to find Moonah Arts Centre

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Upcycled Collage and Stitch Books
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a day of exploring and playing with collage and stitch! \nWe’ve been inspired by Danish textile and mixed media artist Lisbeth Degn and her delightful little stitch books. Lisbeth’s stitch books are built upon recycled children’s books (small books\, no larger than 10x10cm)\, collaged with Lisbeth’s own mono/gelli printed papers and filled with some of her favourite hand stitches. \nJoin in the fun of working on a little stitch book like this one Lisbeth Degn has made. If you came to our January Explore Day\, you could use some of your gelli-printed papers for backgrounds (or bring along other painted or printed papers in your stash that you’d like to use up). \nWhile we’re on the theme of books….perhaps you have some favourite books about stitch you’ve discovered in an op shop? Perhaps you’ve made little stitch books yourself? Bring them along to share! \nFeel free to work on your own projects if you prefer. \n\nMore inspiration from Lisbeth Degn \n\nA little stitch book (10×10 cm) based on an old children’s book. Gelli prints on a collaged background. An experiment to see how much variation you can get out of just a running stitch or a seed stitch.\n\n\nAnother little stitch book (10x10cm old children’s book). Collaged with mono printed papers and filled with some of Lisbeth’s favourite stitches.\n\nAnd you can view Lisbeth Degn’s other YouTube videos as well for loads of inspiration! \n\nWhat to bring \n\na small children’s book from an op shop (a book that has “seen better days” but is still structurally sound is perfect)\nsome mono-printed or painted papers\nyour favourite collage glue and a brush (alternatively a glue stick)\nall the usual sewing gear\, scissors\, needles\, threads etc\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the KWC ($20 until June 30\, then $40pa) is welcome to join our Sundays at no extra cost. SUMMARY:Additional Workshop: Paper as Textile with Anzara Clark
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand we have scheduled a second workshop.\nBook now for this very popular event!\nCurrently based in Ballarat\, Anzara Clark is an award winning\, multi-disciplinary artist whose work explores various types of textiles\, paper\, and recycled material manipulations\, overlaid with textile process interventions and integrated printmaking techniques. Her work is tactile\, textural\, dimensional\, and narrative\, seeking a poetic aesthetic in the creative process and in the objects she makes. Initially working in textiles\, awards for her paper wearable art led her to develop a fascination with paper as a textile and embark on an immersive and ongoing journey into the creative possibilities of paper. Explorations of contemporary and traditional paper knowledge and endless curiosity underpin her ongoing creative experimentation with paper\, seeking innovative ways of using this age-old material. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/anzaraclarkartist\n\nPaper as Textile: Techniques and approaches for paper sculptural and garment forms\, dimensional paper objects and paper wearable art\nIn this 2-day workshop we will consider different approaches and technique responses to the challenges involved in working with paper as a textile. We will explore foundation skills and a range of paper manipulation processes that will allow your creative inspiration to take flight\, knowing that your paper artworks will stand up to creative extensions and experimentation\, as well as stresses of installation\, exhibition and competition formats. \nWe will learn to incorporate experimentation and engineering interventions into construction approaches and build a knowledge base that will encompass traditional and contemporary processes\, enhance creative options and honour the amazing material that is paper. \nSpecifically\, we will learn to: \n\nHarness the tensions and challenges in the material nature of paper;\nIncrease durability of paper materials;\nEnhance the strength of papers without compromising flexibility and softness;\nEmbed durability into construction processes;\nUnderstand weight bearing stressors and how to counteract weight impacts in specific regions of an artwork;\nCreate light-weight form support for artwork components requiring specific shapes;\nUnderstand how to select and strengthen suspension points and other point load sites in an artwork to ensure that it is prepared for exhibition and installation requirements.\n\nThe workshop is suitable for anyone interested in using paper more innovatively in their current creative practice or branching out into new creative paper adventures\, whether that be dimensional paper forms\, soft paper sculpture\, paper garment forms or paper wearable art. \nInspiration from Azara\n\nPlease note: \n\nA list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms
