SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Transparent Fabrics
DESCRIPTION:** Note: this activity has been rescheduled to 5 January 2025.  \nThis month Sue Roberts will lead us in exploring ideas for using fine\, see-through fabrics in creative ways. We will be focusing on very simple hand stitching rather than machine stitching during the Sunday session. \nExamples of transparent fabrics include organdy\, organza or similar sheer fabrics including ribbons (commonly used by florists)\, tulle\, fine lace with larger holes\, and scrim (open weave bandage fabric). \nThese fabrics can be: \n\nlayered to alter the colour or shade of the fabric underneath\nstitched over with decorative stitches\nroughly torn or neatly edged\, depending upon the effect you like\ntwisted and shaped\nmade into light-weight three-dimensional shapes that can be attached to a base fabric\nused to cover and hold small lightweight objects in place with simple decorative stitching\nstitched by hand or machine\n\n\nInspiration \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to consider bringing. SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Cyanotype Printing
DESCRIPTION:This month (assuming we don’t have rain!) we will be exploring cyanotype (commonly called blue printing). \nCyanotype is a photographic printing process using two chemicals (ferric ammonium and potassium ferricyanide) which react with UV light to produce a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings\, referred to as blueprints. \nWe will use botanical elements (leaves or grasses)\, stencils\, doilies or lace to create decorative prints. SUMMARY:A Botanical Collection with Irene Manion
DESCRIPTION:Irene Manion is a multidisciplinary artist living in the Lake Macquarie area of NSW. \nAs a practicing textile artist for over 30 years\, Irene has focussed on machine embroidery techniques. Her work has been regularly exhibited in solo\, group and selective exhibitions. \nIn recent years Irene has evolved a unique sewing technique involving increased stitch length. She also stitches on non-traditional surfaces like plastic and Perspex to convey messages about the environment. \nWith a teaching background in textiles and visual arts\, photography and video production\, Irene’s work has been published in numerous books and magazines. \nwww.irenemanion.com \n\nA Botanical Collection – an  exploration of 3D machine embroidery\n‘A Botanical Collection’ allows us to explore colour\, pattern\, transparency and texture through stitch. The workshop delves into the use of free-motion machine embroidery to create a diverse botanical collection of leaves and petals or other botanical shapes. DESCRIPTION:Jude Walker is a long-time Stitching & Beyond member. \nWith 30 years of crafting\, Jude has a vast knowledge of techniques which she is able to offer in many different ways.  As a basket weaver for many years\, Jude is able to see a bunch of fibres and know straight away what you can do with them. She finds it very satisfying and enjoys sharing her knowledge with others. \n\nMake an Amulet \nThe focus of this mini-workshop is to make an amulet – an ornament or small piece of jewellery thought to give protection against evil\, danger or disease. In many traditional cultures\, amulets are worn for protection but in this workshop we will make one purely for decorative purposes! The feature image above shows a range of Jude’s amulets made from various fibres and beads. \n\n Come along to enjoy this relaxed mini-workshop. DESCRIPTION:Textiles for Deborah Campbell have always been an important element of her artistic expression and how she interprets the coastal landscape. \nDeborah’s fascination for the coast is rooted in her childhood holidays and memories of exploration. She has always been intrigued with what will be revealed round the next headland and the idea of continual change and renewal by the incoming tide. \nThe methods Deborah uses reflect her training in printed textiles. However\, in a much less technical way\, she likes the process now to be much more spontaneous and expressive\, using quite simple printing techniques like Lino\, Collagraph and Geli printing. \nDeborah works onto organza and gauze to give her the option to layer fabrics and create depth of colour and pattern. These are then constructed using free motion machine embroidery as her drawing tool\, combined with hand embroidery. SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Kawandi
DESCRIPTION:What is Kawandi? \nIn India\, ‘Kawandi’ means quilt. It is a technique developed by the Siddis\, an African community brought to India more than 800 years ago. It is made with recycled materials\, entirely by hand. The process is engaging\, creative\, relaxed and sustainable. It is an interesting visual example of repetitive stitching\, a technique that is used to great effect in modern stitching. \nExploring Kawandi \nWe will start a small sample quilt (around 50cm wide) in order to get the hang of the technique. It could be a short table runner\, table mat\, or cushion cover size. By making a sample size on the day\, you will be able to consider a few things before attempting a larger quilt. \nThe most important thing is that both backing fabric and wadding are thin for ease of stitching. This allows for having to sew through 4 thicknesses of fabric. Soft\, drapey\, aged or even slightly worn backing fabrics are best. The backing needs to be 3-5cm larger all around than the wadding. \nPlease bring plenty of light weight cotton fabric scraps from your stash or suitable lightweight recycled fabrics! \nWe will start off stitching scraps onto the folded border and upon completion of the first row all the way around\, will insert the wadding close to the first row of stitches. \n   \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n\nInspiration \nLisa will be leading our exploration into Kawandi this month. SUMMARY:Landscape Collage with Gloria Loughman
DESCRIPTION:Gloria Loughman was first initiated to the world of textile collage nearly 30 years ago when recovering from a course of chemotherapy. What began as therapy soon developed into a life-long passion\, giving Gloria the opportunity to travel the world exhibiting her quilts. She has won many major awards in Australia\, Europe\, Japan and the United States. Her quilt ‘Kimberley Mystique’ was the winner of Australia’s most prestigious national quilting award in 2003. Gloria has also held a number of solo exhibitions and published several books. \nLiving by the sea on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria and travelling extensively with her talented photographer husband\, Gloria is never short of inspiration. She is continually challenged to reproduce images of Australia’s unique and fascinating landscapes in fabric. Underlying all her work is a passion for colour and the ongoing challenge to capture light in her work. In more recent times\, Gloria’s work has become more abstract as she plays with pattern and colour. Her series on buildings and other facades is a result of a love of architecture and the opportunity to travel and explore\, photographing many fascinating structures. \nAs a trained teacher\, Gloria enjoys sharing her knowledge and skills with others teaching her popular classes extensively in Australia and in more than 20 countries overseas.  She likes to challenge her students to design their own quilts\, but is also happy to provide patterns for those less confident. Her commitment to teaching was acknowledged when she received the Rajah award in 2009 for ‘an outstanding contribution to Australian quilt making’. \nwww.glorialoughman.com \n\nLandscape Collage\nThe focus of this workshop is to create a landscape where the play of light and colour across the surface adds movement and perspective.  We will start by drawing out our design then selecting our colour scheme and fabrics.  We will extend our range by overpainting and sponging some commercial fabrics that have interesting prints or textures. The collage process will then be demonstrated\, and participants will work on their backgrounds. SUMMARY:Totems and Talismans with Irene Manion
DESCRIPTION:Irene Manion is a multidisciplinary artist living in the Lake Macquarie area of NSW. Her daily walk involves taking her camera with a zoom lens attached and attempting to photograph every bird of interest she comes upon. Images are then stored in a large file creating a wonderful resource for Irene to develop into a design that can either be painted in watercolour or developed into a textile piece. \nIrene’s current textile practice involves manipulation of digital images in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator which\, once finished\, are dye-sublimation printed onto polyester cloth. The printed fabric is then further embroidered. Irene has evolved a unique sewing technique involving stitching long stitches using a sewing machine. She also stitches on non-traditional surfaces like plastic and Perspex to convey messages about the environment. \nWith a teaching background in textiles and visual arts\, photography and video production\, Irene has exhibited her work widely in many solo\, group and selective exhibitions. \nwww.irenemanion.com \n\nTotems and Talismans\nThis workshop invites participants to explore the full potential of transfer dyes\, also known as disperse dyes or sublistatic dyes. These dyes are unique in that they do not require immersion in water but involve painting or printing the dyes onto paper which is then heat pressed onto the fabric for the ‘transfer’ of colour to occur. Like other dyes\, these dyes leave no residue on the surface of fabric. \nTotemic and talismanic forms will appear in the transfer dying process by accident and by design. We’ll be discovering the versatility of these dyes by applying a range of experimental ways to apply the dyes from the most accidental\, through to the most controlled. This dye process can be applied to glossy\, transparent and matte fabrics of various weights. The only proviso is that there must be polyester in the fabric. \nDigital images based on photographs\, including photographs of your own hand-made designs in other media\, can all be transfer printed onto fabric. The only limitation in size is the width of the fabric that is being printed on. Some computer-generated digital designs\, pre-printed onto transfer paper\, will be provided for participants to print with. For this workshop\, however\, no specialist printing equipment will be required. The only printing device needed is the domestic iron. Once our totems and talismans are printed\, they will be machine and/or hand stitched to enhance their surface. \nThe finished item/items can be used to embellish clothing\, as fabric jewellery\, or applied to other surfaces such as personalised books or boxes\, or simply be framed/hung as a one-off image. The techniques learned will always have wider application and can be integrated into the studio practice of artists working in different ways. DESCRIPTION:We will be exploring the wonderful opportunities of dying textiles with rust. Start hunting around your shed and the local tip shops for old interestingly-shaped bits of iron (non-galvanised). \nBe imaginative – don’t restrict yourself to just washers and springs. SUMMARY:International Art Textile Biennale 2023 - now on at Moonah Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce that Glenys Mann of Fibre Arts Australia (and member of Stitching and Beyond) is brought an exhibition of selected works from the International Art Textile Biennale 2023 to Tasmania. This incredible exhibition of art textiles by many well known international\, as well as Australian artists\, is on display at the Moonah Arts Centre (MAC). We are thrilled that Glenys has included MAC in her regional gallery tour! \n  \nThe exhibition at MAC runs from 15 December until 20 January 2024 – Tuesdays to Fridays\, 10am-5pm and 10am-2pm on Saturdays.\nPlease be aware that MAC is closed on Sundays\, Mondays and public holidays. \n\nRead a review of the 2023 biennale by Queensland artist and writer Sandy Pottinger here.\nSandy is a retired lecturer in Visual Arts from the University of Southern Queensland and was art critic for the Toowoomba Chronicle\, writing the Around the Galleries column for twenty-five years. SUMMARY:Eco Print on Leather with Lindy Whitton
DESCRIPTION:Yet another opportunity to learn eco-printing on leather with the talented Lindy Whitton.\nBook now for this very popular and unique experience!\n\nEco Print on Leather – Natural\, Crisp and Beautiful\nThis workshop will cover all you need to know to create natural\, crisp and beautiful botanic prints on leather. Topics covered include: \n\ntypes of leather and which to use\nhow to mordant leather\, recipes\nwhich leaves print best\nusing natural dye blankets\nusing iron blankets\nhow to bundle\nsteam or simmer?\ndrying the leather\nconditioning the leather – which products to use\nuses for printed leather\n\nThe day will be a mix of discussion and hands on printing. You will make some tester samples to explore leaves and dye blankets and then move on to make one or two larger prints. \nAt the end of the day you will take home the full kangaroo hide printed in several sections and be able to use it for projects such as shoe making\, bookbinding \, purse\, wallet\, clutch etc. \n\nMaterials supplied by Lindy (a materials fee of $35 is included in the workshop price)\n\nA full kangaroo leather hide per person ( approx. 5 square feet)\n\n\nMordant buckets and mordant chemicals\n\n\nNatural Dyes and dye blankets\n\n\nTubes for bundling\n\n\nVessels for steaming/simmering\n\n\nVarious leaves\n\n\nYou will need to bring\n\nSelection of fresh or dried leaves/flowers – good printers are maple\, rose\, cotinus and sycamore leaves\, and for flowers\, coreopsis dahlias\, cosmos\, chrysanthimum and gerbera\n\n\nSheet of recycled plastic to use when bundling the leaves and leather( please\, no cling wrap). You could use a recycled dry cleaning bag\, recyclable garbage bin liner\, large plastic bag etc. It should be at least 40 cm wide and 1.2 m long but you can combine sections to make this.\n\n\nDrying board and some push pins. Used for drying the wet leather and can be anything that you can push the pins into eg chipboard\, coreflute etc. Approx. 40x60cm should be fine.\n\n\nElastic bandage or 2 inch wide strips of stretch cotton. Her inspiration is always the environment and although the imagery is abstract in nature\, that echo remains. The alchemy of materials and how they can be utilised to produce art has always fascinated her. This can come about in many forms and sees prosaic materials being used for purposes for which they were never intended. Texture\, tone and line always appear in her work which creates visual excitement. \nShe is a collector of “What Ifs”. Her earliest art making was in Ceramics and Watercolour which have evolved into painting\, printmaking and mixed-media. DESCRIPTION:Our biennial Out of Hand exhibition is on again in 2023 with a wonderful collection of fibre\, paper and textile artworks created by the members of Stitching and Beyond. The exhibition is always exceptional with a curated collection of works of all shapes\, sizes\, textures and colours. You can expect to see 2D and 3D works and there is bound to be something of interest for everyone! \nOur Annual Challenge pieces from 2022 (Threads of Life) and our 2023 Challenge pieces (Under the Microscope) are also on display.
