SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Kawandi
DESCRIPTION:What is Kawandi? \nIn India\, ‘Kawandi’ means quilt. It is a technique developed by the Siddis\, an African community brought to India more than 800 years ago. It is made with recycled materials\, entirely by hand. The process is engaging\, creative\, relaxed and sustainable. It is an interesting visual example of repetitive stitching\, a technique that is used to great effect in modern stitching. \nExploring Kawandi \nWe will start a small sample quilt (around 50cm wide) in order to get the hang of the technique. It could be a short table runner\, table mat\, or cushion cover size. By making a sample size on the day\, you will be able to consider a few things before attempting a larger quilt. \nThe most important thing is that both backing fabric and wadding are thin for ease of stitching. This allows for having to sew through 4 thicknesses of fabric. Soft\, drapey\, aged or even slightly worn backing fabrics are best. The backing needs to be 3-5cm larger all around than the wadding. \nPlease bring plenty of light weight cotton fabric scraps from your stash or suitable lightweight recycled fabrics! \nWe will start off stitching scraps onto the folded border and upon completion of the first row all the way around\, will insert the wadding close to the first row of stitches. \n \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n\nInspiration \nLisa will be leading our exploration into Kawandi this month. She has recommended some YouTube resources to inspire you. Lisa particularly recommends the one by Kieren Dutcher. \n\nWorks Created by Margaret Fabrizio in 2022 (atree3)\nMake a Kawandi Quilt (Kieren Dutcher)\nKawandi – Techniques & Tips for Your First Quilt (Marion’s World)\nReviving the Art of Siddi Quilts (30 Stades)\n\n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to consider bringing.  No need to purchase fabrics – just bring what you already have in your stash! \n\nDownload the list – Exploring Kawandi\nYour lunch. SUMMARY:Sculptural Textile Art with Priscilla Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Priscilla Edwards began creating sculptural textiles while studying embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University during the 1990’s. It was here she was encouraged to nurture her love of found materials and transform the lost and overlooked into arresting works of art. \nOver the past 20 years Priscilla has developed a unique range of manipulation methods using hand and machine stitching combined with wire\, fabric\, wax and found objects to create pieces full of whit and charm. These charming\, yet slightly dark\, fairytale-like sculptures transcend the familiar qualities of the original materials and capture Priscilla’s perceptions of beauty\, fragility and intrigue. Once drawn into her enchanting world of afternoon tea\, angelic angels and faux flora it’s hard not to be captivated by Priscilla’s inquisitive imagination. \nPriscilla’s beautifully illustrated book ‘Sculptural Textile Art’ was published by Search Press in 2022 exploring her wealth of techniques and processes. This stunning step by step guide shares Priscilla’s approach to creating sculptural textiles and is the perfect inspiration for anyone wanting to develop ideas in new and exciting ways. \nwww.priscillaedwards.co.uk \n\nSculptural Textile Art workshop\nExplore the extraordinary possibilities of working with lightweight wire to create small-scale sculptures that incorporate found materials. Priscilla will share her unique combination of creative techniques showing you how to shape wire by using pliers and fingertip manipulation to make a structure. Priscilla will then explore the process of applying layers of silk and wax to your pieces – these can then be embellished by adding stitching\, touches of paper\, paint\, buttons\, broken jewellery\, beads and anything else you may like to add. \nAs the sculptures develop you will see their distinct characters unfolding and becoming your own creations. Repurposing materials is hugely rewarding as it allows you to use fragments of precious fabrics and treasures in your stash producing an original piece that is totally personal and unique to you. \nThis workshop is aimed to inspire with lots of different techniques and processes so you can develop them in a way that fits in with your own practice. It would suit anyone who enjoys working in a three-dimensional way with mixed media techniques. Priscilla will bring lots of her own work and will talk you through how she puts pieces together; this provides the perfect insight into her own making and how she develops ideas. \nPlease feel free to bring any additional resources you wish to work with. Priscilla’s workshops always encourage you to develop personal pieces of work. \n\nInspiration from Priscilla\n\n\nWhat to bring:\n\nA full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop\n\nPlease note:\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy\n\nFinding and Parking at Moonah Arts Centre \n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Coasters\, cords\, buttons & beads
DESCRIPTION:We will be exploring the art of wet felting with Robyn Delaney.  Robyn will demonstrate some basic techniques to make small items such as coasters\, cords\, buttons and beads. These can be easily made with small amounts of wool tops or pre-felt. \nWhile coasters can be made for their own sake\, for Robyn they are usually a by-product of making samples for larger projects. They can be a way to hone colour choices or to learn how to make straight edges and square corners. \nFelted cords\, buttons and beads can be used on their own\, embellished with hand stitch or incorporated into other textile and fibre projects. \n\nInspiration \n\n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to bring. Please don’t buy anything. Robyn will bring extras of most things. Just bring what you already have in your stash! \n\nA small amount of wool top/roving in the colours of your choice or what you have available.\nPlease don’t buy – Robyn will bring some of her stash for the price of a gold coin donation.\n2 square-ish pieces of bubble wrap. These don’t need to be larger than 40×40 cm each.\nA 20cm square card or paper with a dark outlined edge (your “template”) if you want to make coasters.\nA small old towel or two to put on your table and under the bubble wrap etc\, to keep the floor dry.\nA small amount of soap or detergent (there will be some to share).\nA small/medium container for the water/soap mix – eg a 1kg yogurt or ice-cream container.\nAn implement to transfer small amounts of soapy water to your project. This can be a plastic bottle with a few holes in the lid or a scrunched up plastic shopping bag.\nA thin pencil\, chopstick or thick piece of wire or similar to form or maintain a hole in any beads you make. Alternatively\, you can make them directly onto your new cord.\nIf you want to make lots of beads\, then a bowl with a lid to rattle the soft beads around would make them faster.\nYou could also bring some small pieces of thin silk or open weave cotton or other fibres to use as embellishments if you wanted to.\nYour lunch (there are also shops nearby if you prefer) Note: your membership provides tea\, green tea\, instant coffee\, milk and mugs\n\n\nAlternatively\, bring your choice of another project\n\n\nUpcoming Explore Days \n\n6 April – Lift Your Art Supplies Game!\n4 May – Tasmanian Flora\n8 June – TBA\n6 July – Social Stitch Day\n3 August – TBA\n14 September – TBA (NOTE: 2nd Sunday due to Father’s Day)\n5 October – Social Stitch Day\n9 November – Dyeing Threads (NOTE: 2nd Sunday due to Tasmanian Craft Fair – Deloraine)\n7 December – TBA\n\n\nHow to join KWC and attend our regular Explore Days \n\nAnyone who is a financial member of the Kingborough Women’s Club (KWC) ($40 per annum) is welcome to join our monthly Let’s Explore Sundays at no extra cost.\n\n\nIf you aren’t already a KWC member you can apply here then scan or photograph your form and email it to sandbmemberships@gmail.com with “KWC Application” in the header.\nAlternatively\, you could bring the form with you on a Let’s Explore Sunday.\n\n\nOnce we reply to your email\, then please make payment directly to KWC.\nThe annual fee is $40 and is due 1 July each year.\n\n

SUMMARY:Beyond Print with Stitch - Gaye Nieuwenhof
DESCRIPTION:Gaye Nieuwenhof has been creating and exhibiting her work for many years along with teaching various techniques to help inspire others. Her inspiration is always the environment and although the imagery is abstract in nature\, that echo remains. The alchemy of materials and how they can be utilised to produce art has always fascinated her. This can come about in many forms and sees prosaic materials being used for purposes for which they were never intended. Texture\, tone and line always appear in her work which creates visual excitement. \nAs an artist and an educator\, Gaye strives to inspire and imbue her students with the passion for art. Combining various\, often unorthodox media to create unique pieces\, she assists all her students to develop their distinct artistic voice\, while understanding and appreciating the diversity of the world of art. \nwww.gayenieuwenhof.com \n\nWorkshop Overview\nIn this workshop we will be using gel plates and craft presses to create eco printed monotypes on both fabric and paper which we will then collage and stitch to complete the piece. \nUsing local flora to eco print images onto paper with the boiling method and/or the press method will introduce more surprises. Exciting processes and techniques will produce unique work. \nBe prepared to: \n\nprint onto fabric and paper on day one\nuse ink and stencils on day two\, along with starting to stitch\ncompleting one piece of work on either paper or fabric on day three.\n\n\nInspiration from Gaye\n\n\nWhat to bring:\n\nA full list of requirements will be sent to each participant prior to the workshop\n\nPlease note:\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy\n\nHow to find the Colour Circle Studio \n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Tsung Tse (Chinese Dragon Boat)
DESCRIPTION:This month Jen Westren will demonstrate how to make a Chinese Dragon Boat\, or Tsung-Tse.  These can be made into ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree\, or jewellery (e.g. necklace\, earrings) or strung together in different sizes to make colourful mobiles. \nThe Tsung-Tse is a symbol for the Dragon Boat Festival in China. It is originally the name of a food served during the festival made from rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Transparent Fabrics
DESCRIPTION:** Note: this activity has been rescheduled to 5 January 2025.  \nThis month Sue Roberts will lead us in exploring ideas for using fine\, see-through fabrics in creative ways. We will be focusing on very simple hand stitching rather than machine stitching during the Sunday session. \nExamples of transparent fabrics include organdy\, organza or similar sheer fabrics including ribbons (commonly used by florists)\, tulle\, fine lace with larger holes\, and scrim (open weave bandage fabric). \nThese fabrics can be: \n\nlayered to alter the colour or shade of the fabric underneath\nstitched over with decorative stitches\nroughly torn or neatly edged\, depending upon the effect you like\ntwisted and shaped\nmade into light-weight three-dimensional shapes that can be attached to a base fabric\nused to cover and hold small lightweight objects in place with simple decorative stitching\nstitched by hand or machine\n\n\nInspiration \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to consider bringing. There will also be fabrics and some thin quilting available to share\, so please don’t buy.  Just bring what you already have in your stash! \n\nTwo pieces of fabric around 30 cm square to use as a base (eg. patterned cotton patchwork or fabric you have dyed)\nA piece of thin quilt backing around 30 cm square\nSmall pieces of transparent fabric as listed above (eg. organdy\, organza\, tulle\, fine lace\, scrim\, gauze)\nA few finer threads such as sewing machine thread\, stranded cotton\, perle 8 or 12 embroidery thread\nSmall lightweight smooth objects to anchor in place under fabric (eg. beads\, shells\, foam shapes)\nPins\, needles\, and scissors\nA medium size embroidery hoop if you like to use one\nPieces you have made incorporating sheer fabrics\, scrim etc to inspire us all!\nYour lunch (there are also shops nearby if you prefer) Note: your membership provides tea\, green tea\, instant coffee\, milk and mugs\n\n\nAlternatively\, bring your choice of another project\n\n\nUpcoming Explore Days \n\nStay tuned for updates!\n\n\nHow to join KWC and attend our regular Explore Days \n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the Kingborough Women’s Club (KWC) ($40 per annum) is welcome to join our monthly Let’s Explore Sundays at no extra cost.\n\n\nIf you aren’t already a KWC member you can apply here then scan or photograph your form and email it to sandbmemberships@gmail.com with “KWC Application” in the header.\nAlternatively\, you could bring the form with you on a Let’s Explore Sunday.\n\n\nOnce we reply to your email\, then please make payment directly to KWC.\nThe annual fee is $40 and is due 1 July each year.\n\n

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Cyanotype Printing
DESCRIPTION:This month (assuming we don’t have rain!) we will be exploring cyanotype (commonly called blue printing). \nCyanotype is a photographic printing process using two chemicals (ferric ammonium and potassium ferricyanide) which react with UV light to produce a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings\, referred to as blueprints. \nWe will use botanical elements (leaves or grasses)\, stencils\, doilies or lace to create decorative prints. Even if the weather is cloudy\, the process will deliver amazing results! \nCopyright: Margaret Jones \nCopyright: Margaret Jones \nCopyright: Margaret Jones \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWhat to bring \n\nrequirements list (courtesy of Margaret Jones)\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\nHow to find Kingborough Women’s Club Rooms \n\nUpcoming Explore Days \n\n1 December – Using transparent fabrics\n\n\nHow to join KWC and attend our regular Explore Days \n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the Kingborough Women’s Club (KWC) ($40 per annum) is welcome to join our monthly Let’s Explore Sundays at no extra cost.\n\n\nIf you aren’t already a KWC member you can apply here then scan or photograph your form and email it to sandbmemberships@gmail.com with “KWC Application” in the header.\nAlternatively\, you could bring the form with you on a Let’s Explore Sunday.\n\n\nOnce we reply to your email\, then please make payment directly to KWC.\nThe annual fee is $40 and is due 1 July each year.

SUMMARY:Make an Amulet with Jude Walker
DESCRIPTION:Jude Walker is a long-time Stitching & Beyond member. \nWith 30 years of crafting\, Jude has a vast knowledge of techniques which she is able to offer in many different ways.  As a basket weaver for many years\, Jude is able to see a bunch of fibres and know straight away what you can do with them. She finds it very satisfying and enjoys sharing her knowledge with others. \n\nMake an Amulet \nThe focus of this mini-workshop is to make an amulet – an ornament or small piece of jewellery thought to give protection against evil\, danger or disease. In many traditional cultures\, amulets are worn for protection but in this workshop we will make one purely for decorative purposes! The feature image above shows a range of Jude’s amulets made from various fibres and beads. \n\n Come along to enjoy this relaxed mini-workshop. If you are a speedy creator/sewer\, please bring a work-in-progress so if you finish your amulet quickly you can spend extra time with us!\n\n\nPlease note: \n\nAll materials supplied (one amulet per person)\n\n\nTea and coffee supplied\n\n\nBring your own lunch – there are options to purchase nearby\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Mounting and Hanging Your Artworks
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about what makes successful mounting and hanging \n\nToday’s Let’s Explore is essentially a sharing time so bring your works in progress and anything else you wish to talk about. \nDuring the day we will focus on sharing tips and tricks on how to make our work look really professional once it is hanging. This applies particularly to the Challenge pieces\, as they have to be wrangled in and out of their carrying case 10 times in the year. It will also help when submitting your work for the next Out of Hand in 2025 or other exhibitions. \nPlease bring pieces you feel look professional when hanging\, and pieces you may be having difficulty with\, or feel could look better. This is not about paying large amounts of money to have someone else frame and present your work. Instead it is about understanding how to prepare work for this final stage to look great when hung on a wall at home or at any exhibition. \nWe’ve asked some experienced people to share their expertise and would love for everyone to share their own tips and tricks. \n\nWhat to bring \n\nAny mounted art works which you think look professional\nAny works you feel could look better\nAny other works for which you’d like advice on how to best mount and hang\nYour current project to work on or things you’d like to share\nYour lunch (alternatively there are lots of places to buy lunch nearby)\n\n\n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the KWC ($40 per year from July 1) is welcome to join our Sundays at no extra cost. Check here for details on how to join the KWC. \nHow to find Kingborough Women’s Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Experimental Print & Stitch with Deborah Campbell
DESCRIPTION:Textiles for Deborah Campbell have always been an important element of her artistic expression and how she interprets the coastal landscape. \nDeborah’s fascination for the coast is rooted in her childhood holidays and memories of exploration. She has always been intrigued with what will be revealed round the next headland and the idea of continual change and renewal by the incoming tide. \nThe methods Deborah uses reflect her training in printed textiles. However\, in a much less technical way\, she likes the process now to be much more spontaneous and expressive\, using quite simple printing techniques like Lino\, Collagraph and Geli printing. \nDeborah works onto organza and gauze to give her the option to layer fabrics and create depth of colour and pattern. These are then constructed using free motion machine embroidery as her drawing tool\, combined with hand embroidery. The mark making through stitch is used to construct\, enhance and compliment the print. \nwww.deborahcampbell.com \n\nExperimental Print & Stitch\nThis workshop offers a place to experiment and explore different methods of printing to create your own unique fabrics which are collaged together creatively using machine and/or hand embroidery. Inspiration will come from the natural environment informing the creation of your prints using Lino\, Collagraph and Geli Printing. \nYou will create depth in your work by layering your printed fabrics and discover how to mark make & draw using different methods of stitch to embellish and construct your textile. Deborah will also show you how to add a motif in the shape of a bird or plant using machine embroidery. \nNo experience needed – all welcome. \n\nInspiration from Deborah\n\nPlease note:\n\n A full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop\n\n\n Workshop bookings are subject to our refund policy\n\n\n Finding and Parking at Moonah Arts Centre\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Landscape Collage with Gloria Loughman
DESCRIPTION:Gloria Loughman was first initiated to the world of textile collage nearly 30 years ago when recovering from a course of chemotherapy. What began as therapy soon developed into a life-long passion\, giving Gloria the opportunity to travel the world exhibiting her quilts. She has won many major awards in Australia\, Europe\, Japan and the United States. Her quilt ‘Kimberley Mystique’ was the winner of Australia’s most prestigious national quilting award in 2003. Gloria has also held a number of solo exhibitions and published several books. \nLiving by the sea on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria and travelling extensively with her talented photographer husband\, Gloria is never short of inspiration. She is continually challenged to reproduce images of Australia’s unique and fascinating landscapes in fabric. Underlying all her work is a passion for colour and the ongoing challenge to capture light in her work. In more recent times\, Gloria’s work has become more abstract as she plays with pattern and colour. Her series on buildings and other facades is a result of a love of architecture and the opportunity to travel and explore\, photographing many fascinating structures. \nAs a trained teacher\, Gloria enjoys sharing her knowledge and skills with others teaching her popular classes extensively in Australia and in more than 20 countries overseas.  She likes to challenge her students to design their own quilts\, but is also happy to provide patterns for those less confident. Her commitment to teaching was acknowledged when she received the Rajah award in 2009 for ‘an outstanding contribution to Australian quilt making’. \nwww.glorialoughman.com \n\nLandscape Collage\nThe focus of this workshop is to create a landscape where the play of light and colour across the surface adds movement and perspective.  We will start by drawing out our design then selecting our colour scheme and fabrics.  We will extend our range by overpainting and sponging some commercial fabrics that have interesting prints or textures. The collage process will then be demonstrated\, and participants will work on their backgrounds. The tiles are quilted in place before the foreground details are added.  Lots of tips along the way and information about doing a faced edge is included.  Participants can use one of my patterns or work on their own designs. \nInspiration from Gloria\n\nPlease note:\n\nA full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket. \nFinding and Parking at Moonah Arts Centre

SUMMARY:Found and Gathered with Seth Apter
DESCRIPTION:Seth Apter is a mixed media artist\, instructor\, author and designer from New York City. He came to the world of art later in life\, transitioning from a full-time career as a psychologist to being a full-time artist and maker. His artistic practice is based on the concepts of community and collaboration\, and he believes in the power of art to bring people together. \nSeth’s work is all about building layers and creating a meaningful history by integrating paper\, paint and inks\, fabric\, hand stitching\, and both personal and found objects. The core elements are typically abstract\, textural\, grungy and distressed\, colourfully muted\, deeply layered and filled with text (used both as a design element and an expression of meaning). \nwww.sethapter.com \n\nFound and Gathered\nIn this workshop we will explore creating mixed media layers through collaging with paper and fabric\, hand stitching\, painting\, inking and rusting\, surface building\, embossing\, book binding\, mark making and so much more! We will gather inside creating our pages\, as well as explore outside\, seeking found objects to use from nature. \nThis all comes together in the form of a series of mixed media booklets that\, when stacked together\, express your own personal artist voice. The project can be very personal to your own experiences or you can simply make an unthemed\, kick-ass artist book! \nInspiration from Seth\n\nPlease note: \n\nA full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\nHow to find Moonah Arts Centre \n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Totems and Talismans with Irene Manion
DESCRIPTION:Irene Manion is a multidisciplinary artist living in the Lake Macquarie area of NSW. Her daily walk involves taking her camera with a zoom lens attached and attempting to photograph every bird of interest she comes upon. Images are then stored in a large file creating a wonderful resource for Irene to develop into a design that can either be painted in watercolour or developed into a textile piece. \nIrene’s current textile practice involves manipulation of digital images in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator which\, once finished\, are dye-sublimation printed onto polyester cloth. The printed fabric is then further embroidered. Irene has evolved a unique sewing technique involving stitching long stitches using a sewing machine. She also stitches on non-traditional surfaces like plastic and Perspex to convey messages about the environment. \nWith a teaching background in textiles and visual arts\, photography and video production\, Irene has exhibited her work widely in many solo\, group and selective exhibitions. \nwww.irenemanion.com \n\nTotems and Talismans\nThis workshop invites participants to explore the full potential of transfer dyes\, also known as disperse dyes or sublistatic dyes. These dyes are unique in that they do not require immersion in water but involve painting or printing the dyes onto paper which is then heat pressed onto the fabric for the ‘transfer’ of colour to occur. Like other dyes\, these dyes leave no residue on the surface of fabric. \nTotemic and talismanic forms will appear in the transfer dying process by accident and by design. We’ll be discovering the versatility of these dyes by applying a range of experimental ways to apply the dyes from the most accidental\, through to the most controlled. This dye process can be applied to glossy\, transparent and matte fabrics of various weights. The only proviso is that there must be polyester in the fabric. \nDigital images based on photographs\, including photographs of your own hand-made designs in other media\, can all be transfer printed onto fabric. The only limitation in size is the width of the fabric that is being printed on. Some computer-generated digital designs\, pre-printed onto transfer paper\, will be provided for participants to print with. For this workshop\, however\, no specialist printing equipment will be required. The only printing device needed is the domestic iron. Once our totems and talismans are printed\, they will be machine and/or hand stitched to enhance their surface. \nThe finished item/items can be used to embellish clothing\, as fabric jewellery\, or applied to other surfaces such as personalised books or boxes\, or simply be framed/hung as a one-off image. The techniques learned will always have wider application and can be integrated into the studio practice of artists working in different ways. They can be used for free flowing abstracts or ultra realistic photographic imagery\, for sculptural or 2-dimensional work of any size. \nInspiration from Irene\n\nPlease note:\n\nThe fee includes some materials supplied by the tutor.\n\n\nA full list of requirements will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop.\n\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy.\n\n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.
