SUMMARY:Stitching in Relief with Irene Manion
DESCRIPTION:Irene Manion spent over 30 years teaching Visual Arts to mainly secondary students\, at the same time maintaining a regular exhibition schedule that focused on exploration of the textile medium. She has delved into many textile-related techniques including batik\, leatherworking\, fabric printing and dyeing\, costume design and was a finalist in the NZ WOW awards in 2006. \nSince retiring from full-time teaching in 2016\, she has set up her studio at Lake Macquarie in NSW and has exhibited regularly in solo and group exhibitions as well as being a finalist in major competitions. Irene has also given workshops in her specialist areas throughout Australia. \nHer current focus is on free-motion machine embroidery and printing with the dye-sublimation technique. Her multi-media practices include photography and watercolour painting\, and these inform her textile work. \nhttps://www.irenemanion.com/ \nInst: @irenemanion_art \n\n\nWorkshop Overview\nIn this beginner to advanced workshop we experiment with ways of building up textured 3D surfaces\, using stitch and applique techniques. We start with a 2D image and turn into a 3D relief surface. \nExpect to explore the potential of free-motion machine embroidery. We’ll stitch on metal mesh\, metal fabric\, water-soluble fabric\, transparent organza and tuille as well as with traditional loft-creating fibres such as wadding and filling. We will also learn Irene’s unique long-stitch machine embroidery technique. \nStarting with the basics\, we’ll move into more advanced techniques in step by step progressions\, always experimenting with ways to raise the surface of the fabric. Students are asked to bring in drawings\, photos or digital images of organic objects of their choice\, such as fungi\, leaf litter\, insect wings\, bird feather patterns and bark patterns. These will be the starting point for our final designs. \n\nInspiration from Irene\n\n\nWhat to bring:\n\nA full list of requirements will be sent to each participant prior to the workshop\n\nPlease note:\n\nWorkshop bookings are subject to our refund policy\n\nFinding and Parking at Moonah Arts Centre \n\nIf you are not currently a financial member of Stitching and Beyond\, you can join us\, pay the membership fee and then login to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Unlocking the Colours of Nature with Helen Coleman - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:This workshop has been cancelled as a knock-on effect of  the war in the Middle East and issues around costs and availability of fuel. Ticketed participants have been contacted separately for a full refund. \nHelen Coleman is a contemporary colour-woman\, whose art practice is devoted to process and scientific experimentation. She delights in unlocking the hidden colours in the natural world around us. \nTapping into a thirty-year career in botany and chemistry\, Helen explores the artistic potential of local plant and earth materials. These diverse samples are transformed into unique dyes\, pigments\, inks and paints by blending ancient and contemporary techniques. \nHelen shares her research through exhibitions\, residencies and workshops across Australia\, inspiring artists and the broader community to connect more deeply with the natural environment and explore the benefits of combining art with science. \nhttps://www.helencolemanart.com.au/ \n\n\nWorkshop Overview\nThis workshop explores nature’s own colour palette\, as Helen gently guides you through her process to test and transform a wide variety of natural materials into inks\, pigments and paints. \nStudents will explore local\, foraged natural materials for their colour properties\, convert these pigments into a range of art mediums and create unique paper-based artworks that are deeply connected to the local landscape. \nWorkshop techniques include extracting botanical pigments\, making inks\, levigating earths and making natural paints.
