SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Coasters\, cords\, buttons & beads
DESCRIPTION:We will be exploring the art of wet felting with Robyn Delaney.  Robyn will demonstrate some basic techniques to make small items such as coasters\, cords\, buttons and beads. These can be easily made with small amounts of wool tops or pre-felt. \nWhile coasters can be made for their own sake\, for Robyn they are usually a by-product of making samples for larger projects. They can be a way to hone colour choices or to learn how to make straight edges and square corners. \nFelted cords\, buttons and beads can be used on their own\, embellished with hand stitch or incorporated into other textile and fibre projects. \n\nInspiration \n\n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to bring. Please don’t buy anything. Robyn will bring extras of most things. Just bring what you already have in your stash! \n\nA small amount of wool top/roving in the colours of your choice or what you have available.\nPlease don’t buy – Robyn will bring some of her stash for the price of a gold coin donation.\n2 square-ish pieces of bubble wrap. These don’t need to be larger than 40×40 cm each.\nA 20cm square card or paper with a dark outlined edge (your “template”) if you want to make coasters.\nA small old towel or two to put on your table and under the bubble wrap etc\, to keep the floor dry.\nA small amount of soap or detergent (there will be some to share).\nA small/medium container for the water/soap mix – eg a 1kg yogurt or ice-cream container.\nAn implement to transfer small amounts of soapy water to your project. This can be a plastic bottle with a few holes in the lid or a scrunched up plastic shopping bag.\nA thin pencil\, chopstick or thick piece of wire or similar to form or maintain a hole in any beads you make. Alternatively\, you can make them directly onto your new cord.\nIf you want to make lots of beads\, then a bowl with a lid to rattle the soft beads around would make them faster.\nYou could also bring some small pieces of thin silk or open weave cotton or other fibres to use as embellishments if you wanted to.\nYour lunch (there are also shops nearby if you prefer) Note: your membership provides tea\, green tea\, instant coffee\, milk and mugs\n\n\nAlternatively\, bring your choice of another project\n\n\nUpcoming Explore Days \n\n6 April – Lift Your Art Supplies Game!\n4 May – Tasmanian Flora\n8 June – TBA\n6 July – Social Stitch Day\n3 August – TBA\n14 September – TBA (NOTE: 2nd Sunday due to Father’s Day)\n5 October – Social Stitch Day\n9 November – Dyeing Threads (NOTE: 2nd Sunday due to Tasmanian Craft Fair – Deloraine)\n7 December – TBA\n\n\nHow to join KWC and attend our regular Explore Days \n\nAnyone who is a financial member of the Kingborough Women’s Club (KWC) ($40 per annum) is welcome to join our monthly Let’s Explore Sundays at no extra cost.\n\n\nIf you aren’t already a KWC member you can apply here then scan or photograph your form and email it to sandbmemberships@gmail.com with “KWC Application” in the header.\nAlternatively\, you could bring the form with you on a Let’s Explore Sunday.\n\n\nOnce we reply to your email\, then please make payment directly to KWC.\nThe annual fee is $40 and is due 1 July each year.\n\n

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Tsung Tse (Chinese Dragon Boat)
DESCRIPTION:This month Jen Westren will demonstrate how to make a Chinese Dragon Boat\, or Tsung-Tse.  These can be made into ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree\, or jewellery (e.g. necklace\, earrings) or strung together in different sizes to make colourful mobiles. \nThe Tsung-Tse is a symbol for the Dragon Boat Festival in China. It is originally the name of a food served during the festival made from rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Dragon Boats were fashionable in the ancient courts as elaborate wrappings for important gifts. \n\nInspiration \n\nThread Head: Dragon Boats \nThe Dragon Boat Wrapped Holiday Ornament Tutorial – CraftSanity – A blog and podcast for those who love everything handmade \nCai Zong – Chinese String Art : 16 Steps (with Pictures) – Instructables \n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to bring. Please don’t buy.  Just bring what you already have in your stash! \n\nDMC embroidery cotton. Either in 2 separate colours if you wish to do a striped “boat”\, or an easy way is one hank of variegated yarn. Quantity will depend on how many you wish to make. (One hank of yarn will make one dragon boat\, approx. 5 cm. wide). NB: embroidery thread needs to be in complete hanks\, not cut into pieces.\n4 mapping pins ( the ones with the tiny coloured ball on top)\nScissors\, sticky tape\, ruler and a craft knife\nClear drying craft glue\nseveral medium beads\nVery lightweight cardboard (form bases to wind yarn onto) –  1.5 inch by 7.75 inch\nLong needle (e.g. doll- makers needle) to accommodate thread thickness\, beads and to be able to thread through dragon boat (see photos above)\nJewellery findings if you wish to make earrings and/or necklace\nYour lunch (there are also shops nearby if you prefer) Note: your membership provides tea\, green tea\, instant coffee\, milk and mugs\n\n\nAlternatively\, bring your choice of another project\n\n\nUpcoming Explore Days \n\nStay tuned for updates!\n\n\nHow to join KWC and attend our regular Explore Days \n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the Kingborough Women’s Club (KWC) ($40 per annum) is welcome to join our monthly Let’s Explore Sundays at no extra cost.\n\n\nIf you aren’t already a KWC member you can apply here then scan or photograph your form and email it to sandbmemberships@gmail.com with “KWC Application” in the header.\nAlternatively\, you could bring the form with you on a Let’s Explore Sunday.\n\n\nOnce we reply to your email\, then please make payment directly to KWC.\nThe annual fee is $40 and is due 1 July each year.\n\n

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Transparent Fabrics
DESCRIPTION:** Note: this activity has been rescheduled to 5 January 2025.  \nThis month Sue Roberts will lead us in exploring ideas for using fine\, see-through fabrics in creative ways. We will be focusing on very simple hand stitching rather than machine stitching during the Sunday session. \nExamples of transparent fabrics include organdy\, organza or similar sheer fabrics including ribbons (commonly used by florists)\, tulle\, fine lace with larger holes\, and scrim (open weave bandage fabric). \nThese fabrics can be: \n\nlayered to alter the colour or shade of the fabric underneath\nstitched over with decorative stitches\nroughly torn or neatly edged\, depending upon the effect you like\ntwisted and shaped\nmade into light-weight three-dimensional shapes that can be attached to a base fabric\nused to cover and hold small lightweight objects in place with simple decorative stitching\nstitched by hand or machine\n\n\nInspiration \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to consider bringing. There will also be fabrics and some thin quilting available to share\, so please don’t buy.  Just bring what you already have in your stash! \n\nTwo pieces of fabric around 30 cm square to use as a base (eg. patterned cotton patchwork or fabric you have dyed)\nA piece of thin quilt backing around 30 cm square\nSmall pieces of transparent fabric as listed above (eg. organdy\, organza\, tulle\, fine lace\, scrim\, gauze)\nA few finer threads such as sewing machine thread\, stranded cotton\, perle 8 or 12 embroidery thread\nSmall lightweight smooth objects to anchor in place under fabric (eg. beads\, shells\, foam shapes)\nPins\, needles\, and scissors\nA medium size embroidery hoop if you like to use one\nPieces you have made incorporating sheer fabrics\, scrim etc to inspire us all!\nYour lunch (there are also shops nearby if you prefer) Note: your membership provides tea\, green tea\, instant coffee\, milk and mugs\n\n\nAlternatively\, bring your choice of another project\n\n\nUpcoming Explore Days \n\nStay tuned for updates!\n\n\nHow to join KWC and attend our regular Explore Days \n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the Kingborough Women’s Club (KWC) ($40 per annum) is welcome to join our monthly Let’s Explore Sundays at no extra cost.\n\n\nIf you aren’t already a KWC member you can apply here then scan or photograph your form and email it to sandbmemberships@gmail.com with “KWC Application” in the header.\nAlternatively\, you could bring the form with you on a Let’s Explore Sunday.\n\n\nOnce we reply to your email\, then please make payment directly to KWC.\nThe annual fee is $40 and is due 1 July each year.\n\n

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Cyanotype Printing
DESCRIPTION:This month (assuming we don’t have rain!) we will be exploring cyanotype (commonly called blue printing). \nCyanotype is a photographic printing process using two chemicals (ferric ammonium and potassium ferricyanide) which react with UV light to produce a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings\, referred to as blueprints. \nWe will use botanical elements (leaves or grasses)\, stencils\, doilies or lace to create decorative prints. Even if the weather is cloudy\, the process will deliver amazing results! \nCopyright: Margaret Jones \nCopyright: Margaret Jones \nCopyright: Margaret Jones \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWhat to bring \n\nrequirements list (courtesy of Margaret Jones)\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\nHow to find Kingborough Women’s Club Rooms \n\nUpcoming Explore Days \n\n1 December – Using transparent fabrics\n\n\nHow to join KWC and attend our regular Explore Days \n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the Kingborough Women’s Club (KWC) ($40 per annum) is welcome to join our monthly Let’s Explore Sundays at no extra cost.\n\n\nIf you aren’t already a KWC member you can apply here then scan or photograph your form and email it to sandbmemberships@gmail.com with “KWC Application” in the header.\nAlternatively\, you could bring the form with you on a Let’s Explore Sunday.\n\n\nOnce we reply to your email\, then please make payment directly to KWC.\nThe annual fee is $40 and is due 1 July each year.

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Mounting and Hanging Your Artworks
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about what makes successful mounting and hanging \n\nToday’s Let’s Explore is essentially a sharing time so bring your works in progress and anything else you wish to talk about. \nDuring the day we will focus on sharing tips and tricks on how to make our work look really professional once it is hanging. This applies particularly to the Challenge pieces\, as they have to be wrangled in and out of their carrying case 10 times in the year. It will also help when submitting your work for the next Out of Hand in 2025 or other exhibitions. \nPlease bring pieces you feel look professional when hanging\, and pieces you may be having difficulty with\, or feel could look better. This is not about paying large amounts of money to have someone else frame and present your work. Instead it is about understanding how to prepare work for this final stage to look great when hung on a wall at home or at any exhibition. \nWe’ve asked some experienced people to share their expertise and would love for everyone to share their own tips and tricks. \n\nWhat to bring \n\nAny mounted art works which you think look professional\nAny works you feel could look better\nAny other works for which you’d like advice on how to best mount and hang\nYour current project to work on or things you’d like to share\nYour lunch (alternatively there are lots of places to buy lunch nearby)\n\n\n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the KWC ($40 per year from July 1) is welcome to join our Sundays at no extra cost. Check here for details on how to join the KWC. \nHow to find Kingborough Women’s Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Kawandi
DESCRIPTION:What is Kawandi? \nIn India\, ‘Kawandi’ means quilt. It is a technique developed by the Siddis\, an African community brought to India more than 800 years ago. It is made with recycled materials\, entirely by hand. The process is engaging\, creative\, relaxed and sustainable. It is an interesting visual example of repetitive stitching\, a technique that is used to great effect in modern stitching. \nExploring Kawandi \nWe will start a small sample quilt (around 50cm wide) in order to get the hang of the technique. It could be a short table runner\, table mat\, or cushion cover size. By making a sample size on the day\, you will be able to consider a few things before attempting a larger quilt. \nThe most important thing is that both backing fabric and wadding are thin for ease of stitching. This allows for having to sew through 4 thicknesses of fabric. Soft\, drapey\, aged or even slightly worn backing fabrics are best. The backing needs to be 3-5cm larger all around than the wadding. \nPlease bring plenty of light weight cotton fabric scraps from your stash or suitable lightweight recycled fabrics! \nWe will start off stitching scraps onto the folded border and upon completion of the first row all the way around\, will insert the wadding close to the first row of stitches. \n \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n\nInspiration \nLisa will be leading our exploration into Kawandi this month. She has recommended some YouTube resources to inspire you. Lisa particularly recommends the one by Kieren Dutcher. \n\nWorks Created by Margaret Fabrizio in 2022 (atree3)\nMake a Kawandi Quilt (Kieren Dutcher)\nKawandi – Techniques & Tips for Your First Quilt (Marion’s World)\nReviving the Art of Siddi Quilts (30 Stades)\n\n\nWhat to bring \nWe have provided a list of materials to consider bringing.  No need to purchase fabrics – just bring what you already have in your stash! \n\nDownload the list – Exploring Kawandi\nYour lunch. An alternative: lots of lunch places to buy lunch nearby\n\n\nSome people enjoy doing these with Japanese inspired fabrics rather than scrap\, so if you are searching for needles or Japanese fabrics\, here are our lovely local sources: \n\nLittle Japanese Haberdashery\nSarah stocks needles (and fabrics if you are tempted)\nOpen Tuesday and Thursday\, 10 – 2\nINSIDE the old warehouse\, 16 Smith St\, North Hobart\nhttps://www.etsy.com/shop/LittleJapaneseHab\n\n\nWafu Works\nJan stocks lovely fabrics if you are tempted but not needles\nOpen Wednesday to Saturday\, 10 – 4:30\n18 Beach Road\, Kingston\nhttps://www.wafuworks.com.au/\n\n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the KWC ($40 per year from July 1) is welcome to join our Sundays at no extra cost. SUMMARY:Let's Explore - Upcycled Collage and Stitch Books
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a day of exploring and playing with collage and stitch! \nWe’ve been inspired by Danish textile and mixed media artist Lisbeth Degn and her delightful little stitch books. Lisbeth’s stitch books are built upon recycled children’s books (small books\, no larger than 10x10cm)\, collaged with Lisbeth’s own mono/gelli printed papers and filled with some of her favourite hand stitches. \nJoin in the fun of working on a little stitch book like this one Lisbeth Degn has made. If you came to our January Explore Day\, you could use some of your gelli-printed papers for backgrounds (or bring along other painted or printed papers in your stash that you’d like to use up). \nWhile we’re on the theme of books….perhaps you have some favourite books about stitch you’ve discovered in an op shop? Perhaps you’ve made little stitch books yourself? Bring them along to share! \nFeel free to work on your own projects if you prefer. \n\nMore inspiration from Lisbeth Degn \n\nA little stitch book (10×10 cm) based on an old children’s book. Gelli prints on a collaged background. An experiment to see how much variation you can get out of just a running stitch or a seed stitch.\n\n\nAnother little stitch book (10x10cm old children’s book). Collaged with mono printed papers and filled with some of Lisbeth’s favourite stitches.\n\nAnd you can view Lisbeth Degn’s other YouTube videos as well for loads of inspiration! \n\nWhat to bring \n\na small children’s book from an op shop (a book that has “seen better days” but is still structurally sound is perfect)\nsome mono-printed or painted papers\nyour favourite collage glue and a brush (alternatively a glue stick)\nall the usual sewing gear\, scissors\, needles\, threads etc\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the KWC ($20 until June 30\, then $40pa) is welcome to join our Sundays at no extra cost. Check here for details on how to join the KWC. \nHow to find Kingborough Women’s Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Let's Explore Gelli Printing
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a Sunday away from it all! \nYou may want to work on your own project or do some gelli printing on paper. In March we plan to explore collage and stitch in using a repurposed children’s book inspired by this YouTube. So this is the ideal opportunity to work towards the stitch book by creating gelli-printed collage papers for the backgrounds. \nAlternatively you may like to try printing on fabric. Finer weave fabrics work best –  cotton or silk\, ironed to remove major wrinkles. \n\nWhat to bring \n\nAcrylic paints – any brand (or if you wish to print on fabric – water-soluble printing ink\, fabric paint or acrylics mixed with a textile or gel medium. Oil-based inks are not advised.)\nYour gelliplate or home made gelatine plate. Stitching and Beyond member Sally has generously shared her instructions to make your own gelatine plate.\nLight coloured papers – regular copy paper\, rice paper\, tissue paper etc (or/and fabrics to experiment with – fabrics are better if finer weave –  cotton or silk – and ironed)\nA few polystyrene trays or plastic plates for mixing colours\, plastic spoons\nSome mark making tools of your choice. Other ideas: grasses\, flat leaves\, feathers\, stencils\, old lace … the cheap kitchen tool section at tip shops is a great source for odd shapes and textures –  pastry brushes\, potato mashers\,  etc etc\nA flat surface for rolling the paint or ink onto the roller or brayer.  A plastic palette\, ice cream container lid\, butcher’s paper or even aluminium foil can be used.\nA firm brayer (or metal spoon or empty wine bottle or baren)\nMasking tape\nNewspaper\nPlastic or a garbage bag opened out to protect your work area and another to take home your rubbish\nOld clothes\, gloves (your choice here)\, towel – all those practical things!\nyour lunch (or cash to purchase lunch nearby)\, tea and/or coffee and a mug\n\n\nYour inspiration \nCheck out YouTube videos on gelli printing. \n\nSuppliers \nFor those keen on fabric printing\, Permaset paints work well and Kraftcolour (online) sells a great range which has less odour. Or check out these local suppliers for alternative fabric printing mediums: \nPrue Quarmby (Bibiani in Ferntree – Prue’s contact: 0409391426\, bibiani@bigpond.com)\nAdArt (North Hobart)\nArtery (City)\nSpotlight (Glenorchy) \n\nAny financial Stitching and Beyond member who is also a member of the KWC ($20 until June 30\, then $40pa) is welcome to join our Sundays at no extra cost. Check here for details on how to join the KWC. \nHow to find Kingborough Women’s Club Rooms

SUMMARY:Let's Explore... Procion tray dye fabrics and threads
DESCRIPTION:Like all of our “Let’s Explore…” days\, this is a day for us to play and learn from each other. No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \n  \n\nPlaying with Dye on Fabric and Threads \nCome along and enjoy experimenting with some simple but exciting ideas of applying dye to fabric and thread. Dyes\, salt\, urea\, soda ash are all provided. \nThis is a totally weather dependent day! For a lot of what we plan to do\, we rely on being able to be outside. If the weather is awful\, we will do some limited inside dyeing\, but do bring some other textile based activities for those spare moments. \nWear old clothes and shoes\, bring what you can from the list and bring your stitch or baskets\, sketchbooks\, lino to carve\, or whatever\, as there will be idling time along the way to sit\, chat and stitch while the dye works its magic. \n  \n \n  \n  \nAvoid yardage or thickly woven fabrics please – we are working with experimenting. Limited sizes are more suitable today so there are enough prepared dyes for everyone. \n  \n  \n  \nThings to dye  \n\nPieces of washed natural fabrics (no synthetics) white or pale colours\, although commercially printed fabric with paler coloured backgrounds can be interesting -check out the op shops and deconstruct garments! You’ll never know until you try! What if….!\n\n\nWhite or pale natural fibre threads of various weights that you ultimately would like to use in your stitching.\nNatural fibres best for today include cotton\, rayon\, bamboo\, viscose\, tencel\, linen\, modal.\n\nUseful things \n\nan old towel\nrubber gloves\nkitty litter trays or old ice cream containers\na few glass jars\, 300 – 500 ml size\na few disposable cups\nscissors\na few disposable spoons\nplastic bags or bucket for taking home wet\, dyed fabric/thread\npen and paper (some extra notes will be emailed to participants after the day)\n\n  \n\nDo bring your lunch (although there are several food outlets nearby). Milk is provided but bring your own tea/coffee.\n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct deposit if you don’t have cash).\n\n  \n\nHave you dyed your own fabrics or threads before? For this day to be a success\, please bring along previous experiments or samples to share any experience you have. \nHaven’t done this before? Come along with what you have to explore.  People are always generous and will help fill in the gaps of knowledge or materials. \nPlease note: non-members will need to join us to be covered by insurance. \nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms

No one person is “the teacher”.  The main idea is to have the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people doing the “arty textile things” we all enjoy! \nPlease feel free to bring whatever you want to work on if you don’t want to play around with basketry techniques. \n\nA day to explore basketry techniques \nThe traditional art of basketry makes use of natural materials\, including young twigs from trees and shrubs like willow\, plant roots\, grape or honeysuckle vines\, and a wide variety of grasses.  Various methods include weaving\, twining and coiling. \nMany textile artists use these techniques to create texture and interest in their work. Come along to explore the options and perhaps make a small coiled and stitched textile vessel! \n\nYour inspiration \n\nA Google search on textile basketry will reveal great images and inspiration!\nTextileArtist.org is particularly good for ideas of techniques and materials other artists use.\nInterview with Polly Pollock on her unconventional basketry\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCoiled baskets \nStitching and Beyond member\, Josephine\, has kindly offered to share her techniques for coiling with textiles. These are examples of the two styles of basket she has made: \ncoiled \ncoiled and stitched \n\n\n\nMaterials to bring \n\nSome sort of rope to use as a core – Josephine uses cotton cord\, but anything you have available is fine.\nFabric scraps cut into strips to wind around the core. For stitched baskets woven fabric is better\, but old t-shirts can be turned into yarn to make a chunkier basket.\nScissors\nEmbroidery thread\, string or yarn for the stitched basket\nNeedles:\n\nFor the chunkier basket a blunt-tipped needle like a tapestry needle\, with a very large eye to thread the fabric through\nFor the stitched basket a sharper needle with a big eye\, like a darning needle.\n\n\nJosephine will bring along some materials to share!\n\n\n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct deposit if you don’t have cash)\nLunch and tea/coffee makings (there are places to buy food and drink close by)\n\n\n\n\nHave you worked with basketry techniques? Evolon? Tyvek? Lutrador? Shapewell of various weights?\nFelt? Plastic? Bottle caps? Metals of various weights? Coke cans?\nPellon? Vilene of various weights\, right up to pelmet weight? Rug canvas? Misty fuse? Water soluble fabrics?\nFabrics that you melt with a small soldering iron (eg those retro chiffon scarves and others)\, chocolate wrappers…..\nWhat else? \nWhat’s been your glue/spray/heat gun experience? \n\nCan you bring some samples along so we can touch them and think/talk about possibilities? Or maybe bring something you have made and share how you have used these different textiles? \nCan you find ideas to share in any of your books? \nLet’s see if together we can answer any questions and explore some new ideas. \nWith respect to those who are allergic to smells and things\, it may be best if we keep things like glues\, sprays and soldering irons just to talk about rather than use inside. If it’s a fine day\, there’s always space outside! \n$15 fee payable on the day (you can do a direct deposit if you don’t have cash). \n\nPlease note: non-members will need to join us to be covered by insurance. \n\nHow to find Kingborough Womens Club Rooms
